@Littlebit7: Thank you for suggesting front of the house. I am in love with the Bento for specific things we serve at home!

@lamariniere: loooove Villeroy & Bosch.
We're still using the set we registered for, going in 6 years. We're not really fancy "set" people so I just have enough plates and bowls. DD uses the dessert plates as a dinner plate.

@Littlebit7: thanks for mentioning this! It's the first set of heavy duty porcelain that I've seen available in red.
We have a set of 12 from our wedding but most of the pieces we use regularly are chipped and everything breaks on our new tile floor. I've wanted to slowly replace pieces but in stuff that matches our color scheme and will last longer so I don't have to buy a whole set at once. I love the colors they just have not held up!

We got a really nice set of dishes that we can use everyday and for special occasions when we got married. 5 years later only some bowls have chipped. They are expensive to replace, although not as expensive as china. We have Juliska
For DS, he uses plastic plates (munchkin) or a set of melamine plates. Sometimes he uses the Juliska pieces, but I don't want him messing with them!

@looch: yes! They make a ton of really interesting yet useful serving pieces
@brownepiano: they are certainly heavy duty. And lots of different shapes and colors to fit every taste. The one thing I regret getting are the matching smaller coffee cups and saucers. We don't ever do a "coffee service" and I generally require my coffee in 16-20 ounce servings. Ha! But honestly other than the typical knives/mixer/pots and pans these are my favorite thing we received and purchased when we got married. They have held up SO well.

We have 12 place settings of Wedgwood that we use for everyday. I broke one plate when we were first married but none since. I have a fancy set that I don't even put out on holidays - it lives in the china cabinet lol. I have my mom's Christmas set because she got new for herself. I have 6 place settings of a fall themed china that i loved from home goods. I don't really see myself getting new any time soon or ever really.
If you have a home goods near you, that's a good place to check because you can often find nice stuff - but I haven't seen more than 8 settings I don't think. Macys is also good and you can ask for gift cards for holidays so you can add to your collection over time

I've only had our plain white set from BBB for 3 years so not replacing anytime soon! I think based on your situation you def can replace! We don't have any special china nor do I really want any or think they're necessary.

@regberadaisy: we have the plain white Artesano line and I love them every time I time I use them, which is at least 3 times a day! Good design makes me so happy.

We had registered for some nicer stuff from BBB for our wedding, and it started breaking like crazy after 4 years. So i finally said enough is enough and donated all the mixed plates. I kept the pasta bowls, mugs, and salad plates, and bought new plates and soup bowls that coordinated with the colors we had. I seriously bought them at Dollar Tree a few months ago and they have held up great. AND if they break no big deal because they were $1 ha.

We have service for 12 in plain white that we got from Pottery Barn. (Someone gave us a gift certificate asa wedding gift.) We generally use these only for "special occasions" but we entertain a lot, so we have a lot of special occasions.
We used to have LLBean plates, passed on to us used, but they wouldn't fit in our new dishwasher. So I sold them and got some the house brand Coupe dinnerware from Macy's (white, 8 sets). They have huge sales several times a year, so I got them for maybe 1/3 their usual price. They show no wear after more than a year of everyday use and stand up to two toddlers, so I expect we will keep them for basically forever.
Although the two sets don't match, they work fine together for big gatherings when we need more than 12 place settings.

We are still using our wedding set from 4 years ago. They are still in great condition!

We got the 8 setting set for $200 of the Mikasa Italian Countryside for our wedding and use these for more formal occasions but they could also make a good everyday dish http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/mikasa-dinnerware-italian-countryside-collection?ID=19971&CategoryID=53629&LinkType=#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D6%26slotId%3D1%26kws%3Dmikasa%20italian%20countryside
We ordered these from khols for our everyday dishes

we ordered 2 boxes and one of the boxes came damaged and they sent us a third so we have 12 of all the pieces except the salad dishes

We have 12 place settings (dinner plate, salad plate, dessert plate, soup bowl, cereal bowl, & mug) from Pottery Barn, their Great White line, that we registered for when we got married 9 years ago. A few of the plates have chips in them but overall they've held up really well.
If we start to lose plates and bowls, then I'm planning to replace with something from C&B.

We got Sophie Conran for our wedding and I absolutely adore it. Casual (and durable) enough for every day, yet fancy enough for nice meals. And it's white so it will never go out of style. I keep getting asking for more pieces for birthday/Christmas since I love it so much
