We would like to each year but know it's not always possible. At this stage of our lives money is the biggest deterrent. Hopefully it won't be once I graduate! DH's family is in New York so we still try to make it there at least once a year.

At least a small overnight trip yearly. Bigger trip every 2-3 years.

Every year, even if it's just to another city in Texas. This year we are doing Disney World, so next year will probably be just a weekend in San Antonio. I drive my DH crazy...I'm already planning for next year. I have a travel bug

I don't consider visiting family vacation, but we use all our vacation time/budget visiting our families since they live so far away. I hope next year we can take our first real family vacation. Smaller trips a couple times of year (lots of camping!) and road trips.

Every year we go to Myrtle Beach - have been doing than even before I had kids - love it there!

We plan on a yearly family vacation, now with LO being so young that could just be a weekend in a hotel with a pool, but I think it's good for the family to spend time together.

Hopefully something every year. We can at least drive to the beach for a long weekend.
But I would like a big (flights) trip every 2-3 years. I want to be take my child(ren) to new places and see different cultures. My parents never could afford it.

We do some sort of vacation every year. Last year we took 2 weeks to drive across country, this year we're spending 4 days at a state park. We'll likely alternate big and smaller vacations every other year. Budget will be a big factor; however we plan a year in advance so we can save up the money.

We will most likely do a 5-7 day trip each year with smaller weekend trips littered in from time to time. Ideally, we will do a big trip to another country every 3 years or so.

@Smurfette: Neither could mine. Plus my parents weren't into traveling to start with. The furthest we ever went was New Orleans. I flew for the first time as a freshman in college!
Traveling is very important to us. Family vacations at least once a year, even if it's just a few nights away.

@Mrs. Bee: I don't either because it ends up being so stressful! I told DH next time we go though we should make it half a trip for visiting family and the rest as just our trip. I have yet to go to Montauk and really want to spend a few days there.

It's important to us to do things as our family unit as well as with extended family, but given the fact that we don't see some of the family that often, we have to be creative.
This year, my inlaws are coming to visit and we're all going to the beach.

Long weekends away (drive or fly) every few months. Big trips yearly, or ideally, twice yearly.
Traveling is very important to us.

Every year and that doesn't include visiting family which I agree @Mrs. Pen: is stressful!

We do road trips every year. When E is better behaved on a plane, maybe by 3, we'd like to take trips every 2 years.

@Mrs. Bee: yes to everything you said!
We are thinking of Europe next year but it won't be vacation because it is visiting stressful family!

This is something that we will make a priority, even if we can only afford a short trip to somewhere nearby. So at least one small trip per year. DH's family never went on family vacations and it's very important to him that we do. We have traveled quite a bit (before LOs) and love it. We often skip bday/Christmas presents etc & use the money for a trip somewhere together.

Probably once a year for a trip that doesn't involve visiting family.

At least once a year. Some years it will be camping at the beach. Others will be international.

Hopefully we will have one major vacation each year and have two big-deal long weekends vacay that create lasting memories too.

Since getting married in September 2011, we have traveled to Maine, Napa/Sonoma, South Africa & Zimbabwe, Suriname (with a 6-hr connection in Aruba), London, Southern Germany & Austria, and the south of France. I also went on biz trips to Vegas, San Diego, Florida and Cabo San Lucas.
Now that we have a baby, we are going to stick with more local travel because of the added expense and logistical hassle.

We try to travel internationally once a year and some smaller trips on the long weekends.
It is just something that we really enjoy and are lucky enough to be able to afford.

Every year, but visiting family counts since they live so far away. It costs as much as a real vacation when we visit my mom (int'l flight plus longer stay) so we have to count it.
We had a first real family vacation this year. It was wonderful! The last time we took a real vacation was on our honeymoon!

In an ideal world I would love to take a small long weekend trip every year that doesn't involve visiting family. And maybe every 2-3 years a big week long trip. In the reality of $ we'll be lucky if we do a long weekend trip every other year and a big trip once every 3-4 years!
hostess / papaya / 10540 posts
We've been good about doing it at least once a year, it's always much needed time away.
honeydew / 7444 posts
We usually have two family trips a year, and visit our family twice a year as well.
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
Hopefully one big trip a year (to Disney if I had my pick!) and a few long weekends away to places closer like PEI/Maine etc. That is if we are fortunate to have the means to do so!

DH and I debate over this. To me taking 5+ trips a year is completely logical!
The goal, once we are financially back on our feet, is NZ every 18 months to 2 years (it's my home country), where we will most likely end up camping somewhere with my mother (the lady is an addict!), and a big vacation in the US or elsewhere every second summer, plus little trips as I see fit. I love camping and road trips.
I grew up with a mother who loved to go on holiday, and always found a way to get us on holiday, even when there was no money. We went whenever she could concoct some way to get us there! I remember one year we couldn't even afford campground fees, so Mum called a friend who was a principal in a small, tourist town an hour away and arranged for us to camp as a family on the sports field and use the principal's house for showers!

A big, nice vacation (not invoking visiting family and not involving just weekend trips a few hours from home): 1x a year
Everything else: usually 2-3 a year

At least a big trip once a year! We are kind of landlocked, so that sucks..I think once the kids are older, we will do more stuff. We can go to Chicago for the weekend, etc.
it's hard to go somewhere once a year when you're in the midst of pregnancy+having babies, etc, though.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@blackbird: yeah same here about landlocked and not having many places that are easily accessible... hey maybe we should meet up in Chicago I road tripped there with DH and my older siblings for a marriage conference awhile ago... took about 8 hours and I loved visiting!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
Yesssssssssss.
I want to go back! It's only about 6 hours away from us.

We travel to visit family a lot (not a real vacation but lots of good eating). I would like to take a big trip once a year.
papaya / 10343 posts
I think when our LO is younger I'll hope to do more like, 1-2 long weekends with DH and have my parents watch her rather than do a big vacation. Once she is a bit older, probably plan one vacation every year or every other year. It might be a little hard because with my ILs living out of state + some out of state friends, we end up traveling just to visit people a bit, but those aren't really vacations.
eggplant / 11287 posts
One week-long trip with DH's family, a long weekend trip with my family, and hopefully a short (2-3 day) trip just the four of us, even if it just means going to the beach cabin.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@blackbird: I heard the children's museum there is amazing! I haven't been. We stayed at a gorgeous hotel - my brother booked the suite so I'll have to ask him what it was... Once J is old enough for car rides I am so down with that (maybe kindergarten age??) He and little E would just adore each other
