R (14 months) has tried a couple times, but luckily she isn't tall enough so she can't figure it out. I have a feeling we will be moving her to a toddler bed sooner then we would like.

DS is 17 months and hasn't tried yet. He is also too short if he did try. Yesterday at daycare a mom said her 19 month old is climbing out of his.

DD is sixteen months and hasn't tried. Travelgirls daughter is two months older and is an expert crib escapee.

DD is almost 2 and while she could climb out if she tried, she's never really tried. She loves her crib and in the mornings is happy to just play and read books (that I put by her bed so she can reach them) until I go get her. A few times she's said "I do myself" and has swung her leg up, but I always stop her.

My (usually very cautious) 24 month old climbed out. She'd thrown her leg over the side a few times before that but I always managed to run in and tell her "no" and she'd put it back down. One night at 24 months I decided to let her CIO at 2am after she'd been up every 15 minutes for 2 hours and before I knew it, she'd left her room and was in the hallway. We turned the crib into a toddler bed with a pool noodle under the sheet as a bumper the next day. It's been almost 2 months now and she's only fallen out once (but it's such a short drop to the floor she slept through it), and has yet to climb out at all!

19 months, and once she figured it out she wouldn't stop. We had to take the front off and convert to toddler bed that night, not something we expected on a random Tuesday night!

He is 26 months and he has never tried. He doesn't even stand in the crib until we turn the lights on.
There are many other options you can try before switching to a toddler bed!

My 20 month old has not, but then again he sleeps in a sleep sack. When I take him out of his sleep sack he will lift his leg up to mimick getting out, but his legs aren't long enough to reach the top of the crib {and he's tall}.

We moved my son to a twin at 33 months. He never once tried, but he's not a risk taker.

Mine was able to straddle the top at 16 months but was trying for a fair few months before that. Girlfriend has crazy flexible hips and legs.

Around 20 months? He was in a sleep sack otherwise I think it would have been earlier!

Just started to try at 16 months. We dropped the crib to the lowest setting last night, I hope it works!

Not yet at 18 mo. He doesn't stand in the crib hardly ever. When he wakes up, he rolls around or just sits up. I really hope it stays that way!

She never tried - we transitioned her at 20 months to a twin bed. N is very cautious though, so we never even had to babyproof with her.

Not yet at almost 26 months. But I am considering converting his crib to a toddler bed just because I am having a hard time lifting him into the crib!

Not yet at 29 months. He fell out once while I was in the hospital with #2, so we are finally making the transition 2 months later since he seems about ready.

@Smurfette: Yes but she HATES it. We basically keep her in it with a sleepsack and we have to put it on back to front because she figured out how to take it off and I woke up to find her straddling the top of the crib. She actually still sleeps in our room but we're hoping to transition her into her own room soon, onto a floor bed. I'm pretty terrified of what she could get up to without bars keeping her in - she can climb onto the dining room table too. Sigh.

About 22 months. It was quite a shock when he turned up at our doorway!

Now this may seem like a stupid question from a European but why are they only able to get out when they climb? Here the cribs all have two or three bars that can be taken out so the kids can get out of the cribs but still have the snug feeling the crib gives them. I'll include a picture of what I mean. Are cribs in the US made differently?
It seems so dangerous when they have to climb.

Another stupid question. How do they even get out? I have a crib identical to the one @Pumuckl: posted (minus the missing bars), and there is no way DD is tall enough to swing her leg over the side.

My DS climbed out at 18 months - It was one of those nights where he did NOT want to go to bed and he was screaming - I put him in the crib and left.
A few minutes later the crying stopped and I heard a thug - I went to check on him and he was standing at his door with a huge smile on his face!
I put him back in the crib and he never climbed out again until he was 3yrs old.
@septca: they just kind of hoist themselves up there and put their feet on the rail - kind of like climbing a tree - when your determined to get out of the crib you find a way

@Pumuckl: I have never seen a crib like that.
@septca: R is just trying to pull herself up so that her leg goes over the top of the crib. Luckily she isn't tall enough yet.

Not yet at 24 mos! Hope to make it a few more mos until we move!

@Smurfette: I think sleep sacks help with this. I know you already ditched it so you probably don't want to go back to using one, but we plan on keeping M in one for awhile because I'm worried about her eventually trying to climb out!

@lawbee11: They were making me too nervous with her walking around in them. But I do see how they would help with it.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@Smurfette: I wonder if one of the early walker sleep sacks would be the best of both worlds? She'd be able to walk without tripping but it looks it'd still be difficult for her to lift her leg up in one.

DS is 2.5 years and has sort of thrown his leg up a couple of times (that I've seen) but hasn't really tried yet. He is very cautious.
@septca: I had the same thought - but I saw a video on youtube that included a baby that had to be less than 1 escaping from her crib! It was impressive. And scary.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@lawbee11: I think that would be more dangerous cause she would have her feet free and would think she can do it and would try even harder.
Right now it isn't a daily thing so I am not going to worry about it too much. We can always take off the springs and put the mattress directly on the floor too, so she will be even lower and harder to get out of.

@septca: My daughter isn't all that tall, but she would get her leg over and shimmy down the side...it was incredible to watch because the strength it took was nuts. She's very determined (and obviously a daredevil!)
