There is a new Mom's group on Friday that I would love to go to. Ideally I would bring DS, but he won't even be a week old yet. Then again it's a really small group in a private space. What would you do?

I voted 6w but really:
I took him out at 5w and not again until the next week.
I did take him places like my mom's or in-laws though. Just no where with other people outside of our family.
Our first trip was to the whole foods store and our second was to BRU.
This is besides the doctor's office obviously.

Depends what you mean by public...
We were at the health unit two days after she was born - we had an appointment with the lactation consultant privately and then in a group of other people that had given birth that week, and hit the grocery store on the way home.

We went to a consignment shop, to lunch and to Target when he was 4 days old.

First trips out were to the doctor's office. I think his biggest trip out was around 6 weeks or so to a friend's gathering.

At two weeks we took her to dinner with us. I'm sure this next baby will be sooner

I took my daughter to a local mom's group at 1 week and 1 day old. It was so helpful and getting out (as long as you're healing okay) is such a good feeling. I say go for it!

We went to lunch with him when he was less than a week old. We went to our first moms group when he was 3 weeks.

We went out and about from the start. The supermarket, out to lunch, visiting friends.... I was an anxious mess but Im glad we got out there quickly, start as you mean to go on and all that!

Besides the doctor, I took DD on a little shopping trip when she was a week old. I just put her in the Moby and she didn't have any contact with anyone.

I think 2 weeks. It was right after her 2 week appt....before that I wasn't physically up to going anywhere.

We went to a dinner party at 5 days and were out pretty consistently from that point on.

Oh, and I would go for it! A woman came to my mom's group last week whose baby was a week and a half old. She seemed really glad to be out and about, and besides, everyone was so impressed that she'd come and wanted to give her tons of newborn stuff (and advice, which may have been less useful... but still!). If you want to go, you're ready!

I think a Mom's group is different. I took Jax to that at 4 days. I needed the support, I needed to get out of the house, because I was going stir crazy.
I was on bed rest for a month prior to delivery and then was in the hospital for 7 days before I had him. I needed to see people.

Go for it
We didn't go out very much the first few weeks but when he was 4 weeks old we had his red egg and ginger party which had tons of people!

We stopped at Panera on the way home from the hospital. Then we went to Target the next day.

My December baby was born with a collapsed lung and the pediatrician asked that we keep him indoors and away from public places until 6 weeks.

She was 6 days old when I stopped at my old work to let everyone (ok, like 4 people!!) meet her before we headed off to our LC appointment. At one week old, we had dinner at my moms.
I don't recall any other outings until thanksgiving, and she was 5 or 6 weeks old then.

We started taking him out immediately when we came home from the hospital after a week in the NICU (so 4 weeks before his due date). We kept him in his carrier with the canopy up, but he was just fine. We were out and about daily.

I was so paranoid after our full-term baby ended up in the NICU for 10 days with pneumonia, and then my coworker told me horror stories about how her daughter got whooping cough at 6 weeks because she had taken her into Walmart to get milk...so we really didn't go anywhere other than the doctor's office before she was a month old. Next time, as long as everything was okay, I would be out and about much sooner.

We went to CVS with him at 4 days old to get medication for me. We were basically out and about from that point on.

4 days! I went to a church festival type thing with him because I couldn't stand to stay inside one more day. we went out pretty regularly after that.
@Pancakes: totally off topic, but your username now has me seriously craving pancakes with sugar and lemon. nom nom!

We went on a walk to the store at 5 days, but didn't actually go in. Her first real outing was after her dr appt at 10 days old...we went to target!

We took her to the mall at 4 days. She was in her carseat the whole time, and had a blanket around her. She slept pretty much the entire time. Some strangers tried to give me flack for having her out, but DH and I needed to get out of the house.

At 3 days we went to an outlet store for maybe an hour? 5 days we were out of the house from maybe 9am-6pm, no problems though I was stressing that entire day incase she had a meltdown!

I think around 2 or 3 weeks we went to the grocery store and I had her in a carrier close to my chest. I didn't go to any Moms groups until 4 or 5 weeks.

From the first week he was home we had 2 doctors appointments, one trip to BRU, one lunch (between the dr appointments) and the grocery store.

We went shopping at our local (within walking distance) Farmer's Market at 4 days old. I needed to get out of the house for some fresh air and she did great in the stroller. Since about 2 weeks we have gone out pretty well every day, even if just for a walk.

3 days. After a pedi visit we went to get lunch. We went to the store later that week.

We took her with us to run errands (Target, Whole Foods) when she was four days old. I wore her close to my chest in a wrap, and she seemed to appreciate the fresh air. Once I had recovered from my spinal headaches, we took her out pretty much every day. She was out to brunch with us at a busy restaurant by the time she was 2 weeks old, and did great! We usually kept a swaddle blanket over the car seat to avoid any close onlookers, but we got over our paranoia by week 3. I was absolutely itching to get the heck out of the house by the time I came home from the birth center. I wouldn't have survived had I stayed in. I say, go to the new moms group!

We were out right away! We went looking at open houses with my MIL. Someone there said "Awwwww look at the baby. How many weeks old?" Three days! I never had a problem taking her out.

I took her to Target with me at like 2 weeks old, I had to get out of hte hosue. I just kept her in the car seat and covered so people couldn't lean in to see her.

We started going for stroller walks outside the day after we got home from the hospital when LO was 3 days old. Our pediatrician told us to, she said as long as we weren't going to a place where sick people could cough on him or touch him or something could harm him (like a store where things might fall on him) then it was fine. She said babies love to be outside and they need fresh air and sunlight, she was totally right because DS has always LOVED going outside. If he's fussy it immediately calms him down. The second we get home he's clearly upset!

@tinypiglet: thanks for the vote of confidence. Even if DH isn't ok with me going with DS, I think I'll go myself. I need to meet some moms!

@Modern Daisy: good to know! We have an appt with our ped tomorrow so I will ask her.

Good to know ladies! Of course I read the messages here and there, but sounds like most people were out and about pretty early. Hopefully I can convince DH to let me take DS out to the mommy and me meeting.
