I was 19, it was 1999. I worked with a girl who's boyfriend got a bunch of deals at Cellular One. It's the only reason I got one. That and so my boyfriend and I could call each other for free while we were apart at college. I paid for it myself. For a while, my parents didn't even know I had it.

I think I was maybe 23/24. I lived in the country and needed it for the long drives necessary when you wanted to go anywhere.

In 2001, when I went off to college. It was a Motorola shark phone and it was intended to be for emergencies.

I was 15, 1998. I was one of the few of my friends that had one, but we lived so far away from everything it made sense. I could only use it to call my parents or memaw to pick me up from practice after school. The battery lasted for a week b/c it was never used!!! I can't imagine that now, mine's dead by the end of the work day! haha

I had my parents for emergency purposes when I was 16 and driving (think Zac Morris cell phone). I remember getting in trouble for using it to call my friends on it. I think a 10 minute call cost somewhere around $8.
I got my own in '99 (so I was 20/21) but only because I was going to do an internship in FL and the long distance or calling cards costs would have been ridiculous- getting a cell was the practical thing to do. -
I was 16, in 2004. I got it because I had started driving and my parents thought I should be able to call them if I got into trouble.
They make very simplified cell phones for kids - Firefly, Kajeet, etc. - that I will probably allow our kids to have until they are in high school. Our niece got an iPhone when she was 8! No need for a smart phone or even a camera phone until they are much older, but I understand the desire to want to be able to get in touch with them. Pay phones don't exist anymore!
