We explained that it was a sad holiday because we were thinking about some people who were fighting along time ago, and they're not anymore.

I asked LO what she knew about veterans since I know her teacher talked about it at preschool. She said, "Veterans keep us safe in the United States of Anerica." I was surprised her school talked about it.

@Mrs. D: I think of Memorial Day as more of a sad day for those we lost.
Veteran's Day is a celebratory day to thank the men and women who served in our military. My dad and FIL are vets and I wished them a happy day. Other than that I don't go out of my way to celebrate. Just coincidentally I dropped off some supplies going to current service men and women to one of my customers who has been collecting donations for about a month.

We didn't explain it this year, but plan on explaining that soldiers are helpers like police and they keep us safe. So we celebrate them, and explain that grandpa and others in our family were soldiers/helpers.
ETA: I cook thanksgiving dinner for a local homeless veteran's shelter each year, so we have talked about soldiers a bit to LO, but expect more questions this year since she's helping me make food and is older now.

We will celebrate DH and others in our family who have served. We will explain that veterans are people who have served to keep America safe at home and abroad. When DS is much older DH will be able to explain what he did in Afghanistan and how he helped people there. It is definitely something near and dear to our family but funnily enough, DH doesn't like any of the attention that this day brings.

@petunia354: I feel like the younger vets feel the same way as your DH? Especially the ones that have gone to The Middle East.
She is only 3.5 so we have not mentioned it.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: In Canada (and the rest of the Commonwealth), it is November 11th that is our day of remembrance for past sacrifices. We don't have a separate Memorial Day. How will you explain Memorial Day to your LO?

@Astro Bee: I'll explain Memorial Day as the day to remember fallen soldiers- those who died while serving the country. At this point I don't have any friends or family that died during a war.
