When I used to buy something for everyone in the family, I started pretty early, but never more than a day or two before Thanksgiving (because there was a good chance I would forget what I already bought). Now we pull names or do a white elephant gift exchange for the adults and only buy gifts for the kids (ours, nieces, nephews, etc), so we only have to buy a few gifts and that can all get done within a week or two of Christmas
