One of my mommy friends mentioned at a playdate that she is an aspiring photographer...I said I would love to get 1 year photos of LO done, and she emailed me about it yesterday. How do I ask (in a non awkward way) if these photos will be free? Or if she expects me to pay for them (which I don't really want to do, considering she's not a professional)? Any wording suggestions? I keep trying to dance around the words "Do you expect payment?" but is that silly?

I'd just simply ask "How much do I owe you for these?" I'd go in expecting to have to pay for them.

I think it depends how comfortable you are with her! I'd probably be like, "so what type of packages do you offer?" or, "just so I'm prepared - how much cash should I bring..or do you prefer check?" or something.

i would say something like "thanks for offering to do a photoshoot for LO! how much do you charge for a session? let me discuss with DH and see if this is in our budget. i would love to work with you but since her first birthday is coming up, expenses are adding up quickly!"

@sorrycharlie: She doesn't even do packages...it was more like we were talking about what we want to do when we eventually go back to work and she said, "Oh I'd love to do photography...". I think she's just done pics of her own kid, nothing else professional. @loveisstrange: uuugh I guess I just don't really want to pay for them, lol. I more want them because it's a chance to get photos of LO and I together, if it was just him I could probably do that myself.

I agree that following up with a statement like "Let me see if its in our budget" gives you the out if she does want to charge for them.
