J is pulling up on everything. He isn't crawling and has no desire to do so, so I think I can confine him but how do I keep him safe from falling on the hard floor? We don't have any carpeting.

We bought a set of connecting foam mats to put down in the main area where DD plays (about 4x8 feet). It helps cushion her falls *and* saves my sanity because it cushions the noise of her slamming her toys against the ground.
This actually has not been as much of an issue as I would have thought. DD fell a few times, but that stage was really short.

Well....there isn't really any way that I know of, other than to walk with him and be near him all the time. That's what we had to do! Get ready for a few weeks of a sore back.

Our place is all hardwood, but I didn't really find this to be an issue. There's an area rug in our living room where she cruised the coffee table and in her room for play, and otherwise, she just fell onto her behind every now and then. It was a short-lived concern too.

@septca: we have a mat like this! We use it all the time, I just didn't know if it'd be cushy enough, glad to hear it is

@rattles: very good to know it'll be short lived!
@ValentineMommy: yes it's constant whining unless he's standing and walking! He's only 8 months, I was thinking we had awhile before this

@jetsa: Yep!
DD mainly plays in our living room, and the set up is like this: sofa and love seat in an L formation, coffee table in the L gap. Sofa is against a wall - on the opposite wall there is a fireplace. There is a rug under the coffee table and sofa, so any couch/table cruising is protected by the rug. The area of hardwood between where the rug ends and the fireplace is where we put the foam mats, so basically our entire living room is padded.

We just made sure he was either barefoot or in robeez that fit well - otherwise, he fell when he fell! But socks didn't work, they exacerbated his wobbliness.

@septca: we have a similar set up so that should work! I should probably pick up one more mat but it should work well

@scg00387: good to know! He always wears socks but it's getting warm enough we'll start going wo

@scg00387: Oh I agree on bare feet! I also had good luck with Old Navy socks because they had better grips on the bottom than most.

@jetsa: we have hardwoods only and never worried about it. I think he bumped his head maybe once or twice. After that he had learned how to fall so he doesn't hurt himself.

@jetsa: I am not even exaggerating, my DD spent 3 weeks practicing falling backward and forward before she would take unassisted steps. She is the master at falling on hard surfaces without hurting herself. She's like an NBA player.

@septca: haha, that's what he'll be doing I bet. I think (hope) we're a bit out from steps

We have a play mat and a (hard, flat) rug, but invariably DS will fall on the actual wood. While it's not nearly as good for babyproofing as a fully-carpeted house would be, I much prefer that he falls on the wood than on the kitchen tiles, which really scare me!

It never occurred to me to try to avoid having her fall on wood. She quickly learned how to do it safely.

Never thought about it. We have all hardwoods, except tile in bathrooms and kitchen. We have a big rug in the living room but she was fine.

@jetsa: yep he had a pair of 'indoor robeez' over winter. helped a ton!

The best thing for us was indoor shoes or socks with gripping to prevent slipping.

Erm.....my kid just fell plenty on the hardwood floor. When she was just learning to move, we hung out a lot in a carpeted room.
