I don't have experience yet but my BIL/SIL do not have locks on their doors for their 4.5 year old. I remember that didn't have a lock on my door at that age.

I don't think it's so much that they can save themselves but maybe they can come fetch the parents in the event of an emergency. Or what if for some reason you can't unlock their door in the event of an emergency? I don't know ... it just makes me feel uneasy and I don't plan on doing that.

@mrbee: Are you able to hear him call out if he was standing at the baby gate?

I think maybe someone on this board mentioned one time that they were able to train their LO to stay in bed even after they woke up. They were not allowed to leave the bed but would sit there and call out. Now that would be amazing if such training could be completed successfully!

@Mrs. Jacks: we discussed that as a possibility. i guess that would mean we would have to have the door open at all times though?

@Andrea: my friend's toddler (he's well past 2) doesn't get out of bed until she gets him in the morning. she never trained him... he just stays in there!

@Mrs. Bee: you could probably get a gate that attaches to the walls outside of the door and form a semi-circle. i am thinking something like this:

With the baby proof handle on the inside, it's just as easy to get in from the outside as any other door

I'm not sure if I would.. Maybe we'd get those doors that are cut in half? bottom stays locked and the top stays open. Know what I'm talking about?

I wouldn't feel comfortable locking my LO in a room. I don't want the bedroom to feel like a prison, or a place once they're in they're stuck. I listen to Dr. Joy Browne on the radio sometimes, and she always says it's okay to lock kids out of certain rooms, but never to lock them in.

We haven't thought much about this yet since LO is only 6 months. There's actually a lock on the outside of my LO's door from the previous owners, but it doesn't work.

I don't think we'd ever put a lock on anyway because hubby and I are both very paranoid people. We've talked about getting a video monitor for when she's older, because we'll hopefully have a baby #2 by then who will get our old monitor. And if she's one to get up a lot I like the baby gate idea. It would also keep the dog out of her room.

We have lever door knobs so the knob cover don't work. We don't always engage them but they are there just incase. My daughter has been in a big girl bed since 20 months and she never gets off her bed until we come and get her. She's 3.5 now. We have the locks mainly so I can keep my younger son from trying to play in the potty or from going into the bedrooms and emptying all the clothes from the dressers. It's his favorite thing to do all time.

@amy: Maybe it was you that I remember commenting about not getting off the bed? How did you explain to your daughter not to get off her bed?

I wouldn't put an actual lock on my childs door. I did put the knob covers on them though.

@cyndistar3: we're thinking about the knob covers -- not a lock.

@amy: we want to do a floor bed. his crib does convert to a toddler bed though. i wonder if he'd be more likely to stay in a toddler bed than a floor bed!

@mrbee: I think the gate on the door is actually a great solution, I was more responding to locking the actual door, I just re-read my comment and I wasn't very clear about that. I think LO being able to come to their doorway and look out/call out is fine.

I thought we would have to, because I was worried my daughter would wake up and wander around, but we've found that she just sits in bed and yells for us for whatever reason. She's only gotten out of bed by herself once, and she came straight to our room and climbed into bed with us.

I wouldnt feel safe with locking a toddler into his/her room. I would try to find some other alternative
