my oven needs cleaning and i can't find a self clean button, so i'm guessing it doesn't have one 
i've never actually cleaned an oven by hand.
i'm reading that some ppl turn the oven on with a bowl of ammonia and a pot of water, others make a baking soda paste and brush it on the inside of the oven and let it sit on there overnight, then scrub off or spray with vinegar. other ppl say you can't really get it clean without chemical cleaners.
any suggestions?

I have a self cleaning oven but I am terrified to turn that on, so I haven't cleaned mine either.I am thinking about making a baking soda and water paste and putting that on the tough spots, then scrubbing with a long handled brush.

I just did this - my casserole bubbled over the dish and burned some big puddles on the oven floor. Made a paste of dish soap, baking soda and white vinegar, spread it all over the dirty parts and left overnight. It came off super easy in the morning!!! Didn't even have to scrub.

@MrsBrewer: i don't want to tell you how long i spent looking for the self clean function.... then it dawned on me that maybe i couldn't find it because it wasn't there, hahahaha. yeah. i'm slow. seriously though, my kitchen annoys the crap out of me- i have a big fancy LG bottom freezer stainless fridge.... but it doesn't have an ice maker! and the stove, while not fancy, it's still a glass top stainless range, yet it can't clean itself?!? this is the first place i've ever lived (childhood homes included) where i have to make my own ice and the oven can't clean itself. blah.

I did this when we moved out of our apartment. I considered doing the self clean but I googled about fires and fuses being blown when the self clean was run. Plus, the smoke from the process. Oh, it was an older stove/oven, too. I didn't want to chance it, so I just asked the DH to run out and grab some oven cleaner. I sprayed some on and a few hours later scrubbed it off. The oven cleaner stunk and I did have the DH leave the apartment while I sprayed so it didn't aggravate his asthma.
It did it's job.

@bluestriped bee: could you smell it when you turned the oven on to cook with it? the thought of the chemicals baking into my food is freaking me out

@Mrs. Bird - I tried it on the "window" part of the oven and it didn't work so well. But it would work on the door part that is the same metal as the inside of the oven.

I use baking soda paste + vinegar and it works well but it does take a bit of elbow grease. DH just cleaned our window on the door over the weekend and it looks almost brand new but took a lot of elbow grease!

@mrs. bird: After I used the chemical, I used soap and water to rinse out my oven a few times. I didn't have any issues.

@regberadaisy: did he leave it to sit on there overnight or did he start scrubbing right away? did he use a sponge or a brush or steel wool? sorry for the million questions!

@mrs. bird: he didn't and just used a kitchen washcloth. But he redid the paste quite a few times and scrubbed *really* hard. I've tried in the past and had been unsuccessful cleaning the window!

We tried the self clean option once... I was kinda against but DH was like well, it's there for a reason! I'm hesitant to use it too often though!

We really need to clean ours, too, but I'm scurred to use the self-clean function! We just bought some oven cleaner but haven't actually tried it yet..

@mrs. bird: I like the idea of adding dish soap to the mix, I bet that keeps it from drying out...although it might make too much lather...no idea!

I warm up the oven, and then scrub a baking soda paste. Then the next morning i spray with vinegar and scrub. It really does wonders.
@looch: I'd do a vinegar + dish soap + water solution so you don't get too much lather.

I swear by this method- spray (liberally) easy off oven cleaner all over the inside of the oven. Close the door and leave it over night. Next day, just use a sponge and water and everything will come right off. So easy!

i've done the baking soda and vinegar route--while it is helpful in cleaning, my "technique" left a shitload of baking soda residue and clumps that i couldn't get rid of.

I've used Easy Off with no problems, like @pinkcupcake described. I know chemicals aren't huge around here....but sometimes you've got to break out the big guns.
