I'm not due until December, but need to use this time to train my two dogs to not destroy the baby toys and items that will eventually take over my house. They are pretty well-behaved now and don't really chew on anything they shouldn't, but we bought a few things this weekend and they immediately thought they were toys for them. There's no way I'll be able to keep every single item out of their reach once baby is here. Anyone else have similar issues with their dog(s) and what worked for you to keep them from thinking every baby item is theirs?

No ideas, but want to listen to what other people want! We put together our swing, and the frist thing out pup went for was the attached toy! She thought it was for her, not good and I have a feeling she will do this regardless the toy!

My dogs have there own "toy box" that they know they can take toys out of....then I have a baby toy box...it took time but they now know that they cant take toys from that box.

My dogs totally ate the baby toys before the baby got here... but now that she's here, they don't really try to get her stuffed animals anymore. We didn't do anything different, so I'm not sure what really happened... guess we just got lucky!
Altho they did eat my used pads when we went out once... ugh.

my LO isn't here yet..but hopefully this helps a little! I had some things that I had bought before my shower and would bring my dog into the nursery *with* me different times to sniff things and check things out. I used that as an opportunity to address him if he tried to snatch anything (he surprisingly didn't, and he's a total hoarder).
after the shower, I let him in the nursery *with* me while I organized some things. he never tried to take anything, and if he did I would have firmly said "no" or something similar. he's so used to the baby items now that it doesn't really phase him. we just set up the pack and play, too, for him to get used to that.
I have also tested him by putting toys in the swing while I organize clothes, etc (the swing is set up in her room right now) and watched from the corner of my eye to see if he'd try anything. he totally didn't! I was shocked..
that's not to say when she's older and pitching toys from the play pen that he won't try to grab them, but I'm hoping by then he'll be used to it all! he also has his own 'toy box' (plastic bin) of toys that he's had forever, so he's very used to knowing where *his* toys are.

@Rescuemom10 - great idea with the toy box, although my dogs have that now but they still want to play with whatever "new" item I bring home
@Habesbabe - yes you did get lucky, haha! My one dog loves to get into the bathroom trash if we forget to close it before leaving the house. Gross!
@Sorrycharlie - great advice, thank you! We haven't started organizing the nursery yet but will definitely let the pups in to explore while under our watch. Right now the door stays shut 24/7 so they don't seem to bother with it, but I know the second it starts staying open all the time it's going to be extremely interesting to them since it had been off limits for so long.
Next up is training our kitty that has urinary issues and likes to pee on soft things like blankets, furniture, and me when I'm sleeping. Oh the joys of pets
