We are getting rid of our bamboo floors - they have not held up well at all
We are looking at vinyl and laminate
How do you pick a color when all you have is a little piece to look at???
This is what me and DH narrowed down to-
Any thoughts???

It's amazing how different they look in different lights. I personally would stay away from the slate and sepia. I would think the sepia would show stuff a lot and I just don't like gray that much. I'd go for one of the middle two.

For something big, like flooring, I would stay away from anything trendy, which to me right now means no grey. You might love it now, but if you fall out of love with it you're stuck looking at the equivalent glass block until you're ready to do your floors again. And then from there it's more what you want the floor to do for the space. If you have a smaller space and you want to open it up, go for something light that will make your space feel airier and less closed in. We put maple in our main level and our narrow, dark hallway instantly felt bigger. A dark floor will ground the space, and is better for larger spaces with higher ceilings. Dark flooring was also a big trend recently, but has been going out of vogue, so if you're planning to sell in the nearish future it might not be the best choice.
Also, before we bought our floors the mom and pop shop we eventually bought from let us take a home a box each of two different floors. You can ask if that's an option. Or if you're buying from a big box buy one box and return it if you lay it out and don't like it.

Also, just FYI our maple (light colored) shows ALL OF THE DIRT. It's manageable--we vaccuum ~once a week and sweep regularly--but something to know if things like that drive you crazy. Although it looks like you have light bamboo, so you probably know that already.

@JMOM: I'm leaning towards Hazel - I like it flows into the kitchen floor
@karenbme: oh good idea! I am going to ask if they have a box we can get - we are redoing the entire downstairs - which was carpet/bamboo - it will now all be the same flooring

@karenbme: also not selling any time soon, and I was thinking dark floors would show dust easily too....

We have color similar to Sepia. Yes, it shows dirt too but I love dark floors; no regrets!

@Mamaof2: Continuous floors are the best. When we did ours we went from a mix of wood and vinyl to all wood everywhere and it's great. FWIW, we have something very similar to the tawny (also vinyl plank) in our basement, and it shows no dirt at all. I still vacuum down there, but it could probably go for a month and no one would know.

I agree it is really hard to pick on a small sample. Instead of trying to visualize the specific sample color on your whole floor, I would look at your current floors and try to imagine them being generally darker/lighter/etc... Once you decide which direction you want to go from your current color, then you can see which samples align with that.
Our floor store also had much bigger samples available - if you're able to narrow it down to 2 or 3, I would go back and ask if they have larger samples in your favorite colors.
(PS: I choose Tawney, then Hazel. I would avoid sepia and slate)

@MrsLonghorn: @karenbme: just talked to the floor guy and he has a large floor sample of tawny in the showroom but not hazel - Ill go check it out!

Have you tried googling the brand/color? Sometimes you’ll get lucky and either a marketing or personal photo will pop up of a whole room which can give you at least an idea of what a big area will look like.

What color are your cabinets? I would pick something that goes well with that.
We have similar dark colored flooring (Sepia) but we have high ceilings with lots of windows. The dark colored floors help with all the sunlight that comes in. Another good thing is that it does mask the dirt a little bit.. Negative is that water/milk spills are pretty noticeable (I have a two year old boy who gets things everywhere)

@misolee: I misspoke - the entire downstairs will not be the same - we are keeping the kitchen floor the same

@Mamaof2: I’d love more info on why the bamboo wasn’t good - I’ve read that it’s one of the hardest woods! I wasn’t happy with our wood floors or our laminate

@Mamaof2: Such a hard decision! We did our entire house last year in a high quality laminate and I must have looked at a thousand samples. I really liked the vinyl but couldn't get over the "feel" of it on my bare feet. My sister has bamboo and wishes she hadn't gotten it...so many dents etc. I gravitate toward the Tawny because it seems the most classic. Do they have it in store so you can open a pallet up? It would be interesting to see if the different planks have different variation, otherwise, I think the veining might be a bit much through an entire house. Next, I would vote the sepia by default. I want to like the the Hazel but it has a green/gray hue that is throwing me off. Then I would say the slate for reasons PP mentioned.

What about a cooler brown like this?

@gotkimchi: the bamboo was new when we moved in 10 years ago and now its scratched and pitted - the flooring guy told us this was very common with bamboo - or maybe we just have crappy bamboo!

@crazydoglady: one reason I like the vinyl is due to the "feel" which will supposedly hide scratches better
My 9 yr old took off his shoes and did walk on them barefoot which never crossed my mind!

@Mamaof2: That's a really good point! I did waver a lot between the two options and when we have water on the ground, I wish we had gone with vinyl.
I prefer the Tawny. I hope you will share "before and after" pics with us.

I tend to be traditional, so Tawney. Everything else is too trendy imo.

@Mamaof2: We recently got walnut hardwood very similar in colour to the Tawny but I now wish we'd gotten something more like the Hazel.
Ours show every speck of dust and fluff and its super annoying! DH really wanted the grey and I vetoed it - I wouldn't tell him now but that was actually the better choice!

I think with your current flooring I kinda like Hazel. I know it’s a little trendy but not too crazy

I think Tawny is a classic color that will age the best.

Ooh, I really like the tawny! I really want to replace our bamboo floors as well because they have not held up well at all!

I think the tawney is the most traditional, but I actually like the hazel color the best with the other colors you have in the room. Show us the final result once you decide and it gets done!
