My 6 yo had taken 3 things from the lost and found at school and gave us stories about how she got each of them. The first story was believable enough but the 2nd time it didn't ring true so we sat her down and got the story out of her finally. She lost tv and dessert privileges for a week. She was supposed to put them back in lost and found yesterday. She said she did, but they ended up in her backpack today. Turns out she had hidden them somewhere and the teacher put them in her backpack cause she thought they were hers. I am so frustrated and angry- I don't know what to do or say. DH is going to flip his lid. I just don't know how to get it through to her that what she is doing is wrong, not just the lying but the stealing. Any tips or suggestions about how to handle this?

I'm not sure if it is feasible for you, but you may want to take her to a therapist. I can wall you if you want more info but I had some compulsive behaviors like this, I think I was acting out due to being really unhappy/controlled at home. It resolved when I was no longer around my Dad. I've always intended to talk to my therapist about it but have not, I wish I could let you know if my suspicions were correct. I'm not saying that is what is going on here, but she may have a stressor that is causing her to act out? Sorry for the armchair therapy, just my .02

@youboots: Thanks for the insight! We actually have just gotten her in with a psychology group for ADHD testing. If they feel she needs therapy they can do that after diagnosis. I'll let them know about this behavior.
