I need tips about how to get my 6 yo to take pills. She has been diagnosed with ADHD and the liquid medicine isn't working so the doctor has moved us onto pills. It has been a nightmare trying to teach her how to swallow them. We've tried teaching with tic tacs and she did that a couple times, but the actual pills are just not going down and they are so expensive we are hesitant to let her practice with them. Help!!

Can you cut them and put them in applesauce?

My dad used to grind grind my pills into dust and mix it with a spoonful of sugar. The pieces gradually got bigger til I could swallow it.

Can you put a little coconut oil on them so they're smooth like a tic tac?

Not all adhd medicine can be cut so check first FYI! I'd put it in a spoonful of ice cream or applesauce or pudding

My grandfather decided I needed to learn how to swallow pills so he picked me early from school one day and made me swallow a whole bag of M&Ms one by one! My mom was pissed but it worked!

Or maybe a practice run plus incentive? Swallow a mini m&m, then swallow the pill, then you get to eat 10 mini m&ms!

I learned with mini m&ms. Drinking lots of water helps too.

When my DH was in speech therapy (for a swallowing disorder) they suggested putting the pill in applesauce. Also, tucking the chin is supposed to help with safe swallowing.

Sparkling water helps "float" the pill but not sure a 6yo would like carbonated water. Same as above but raisins could work too for teaching.

It it a pill or capsule she needs to learn to swallow? Candies are a better stand-in for pills than for capsules. You can buy empty capsules if what she needs practice with is the gummy sticky texture of capsules
