I think I have put this off as long as I can/should--I'm planning to work until February 2 and then quit forever. (yaaaaay!!!) My boss has never asked when I want to start maternity leave so I figure I should catch him now (today would be good b/c there's hardly anyone in the office) and let him know when I want to stop working, and by the way it'll be forever, not just for a couple of months. I want to be paid out for my saved vacation time after that and be done. Is that all I need to say or am I missing something? Anyone been in the same situation and have advice? My boss is easygoing but I think he'll be very surprised.

I think something along the lines of "Hey Boss, I need to talk to you about my work situation after the baby comes. I've really enjoyed the opportunity to work here, but I am planning on leaving after I have the baby to spend more time with him/her. Right now my plan is to leave Feb 2nd and use my saved vacation time after that."
I don't know if you are planning on SAH, but if you think you might want to work again in the future, just make sure you are super nice so you can use him as a reference later!

Do you gain additional vacation hours at the first of the year? If so, I would wait until after you get those extra hours officially accrued to give notice.

My boss was super surprised when I left. I was really nervous to tell her, but it wasn't that hard when I remembered that I'm really not irreplaceable. But I didn't have much vacation time saved by the time I left. I used it all up before I told them

I told my boss 6 weeks before my planned last day. Enough time for her to figure out my replacement situation but not so soon that I had to feel awkward about it. She was super understanding and only concerned about insurance (which I am not covered through work - so it didn't matter).I just told her my husband and I decided it would be the best option for me to stay at home.

Just wanted to say good luck! Remember to be confident with your choice when you tell him, and don't apologize.
My situation is unique because I told my boss immediately that I wouldn't be back after the baby. We have a great relationship though, and I am under special contract.

Thank you for the input! I just talked to him and said basically what @jedeve suggested, except he said I might want to wait to give notice to make sure I don't get screwed out of any benefits. I have been hesitant to ask HR about maternity benefits and what happens if I quit b/c our office is so small, so this clears the way for that conversation and he was very understanding.
@yoursilverlining: We accrue time as the year goes on so if I only work Jan, that's a couple of extra days that I'll get.
@Weagle: Yeah, I'm definitely not irreplaceable either!
@rawrasaur: @aprk: Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm so glad he was understanding. Now I just have to talk to HR and figure out how to milk as many benefits out of this as possible. But I don't want to take leave, get paid extra and then quit--I would feel guilty about that.
