Personally I would choose pitocin. That's what I did with M. I was 4cm dilated and 90% effaced. The midwife said that the pitocin would probably only need to be turned on and then turned off and I would go right into labor - and she was right. I don't think they turned it on beyond a 4. She said that if my body didn't respond favorably that was okay but with breaking waters you really need to get the baby out within 24 hours so that is a riskier move.

The labor on pitocin was no different pain-wise to me than natural labor and I think that's because they barely had to turn it on. M was out less than 4 hours from the time they started it...only 2 hours of pain.

eta - Why are they inducing you so early?

I had just about everything they offer. I was induced for pre-eclampsia, but she wasn't ready to come out. They did 2 doses of cervadil, 2 doses of cytotek, the foley catheter, pitocin, and my water broken over the course of my labor. The only part of the induction that was really uncomfortable was when they tried to check my cervix after the foley catheter came out, because the balloon had pushed my cervix really high.

I think I'd start with breaking the water and see if you need pitocin after that. I had 2 different epidurals wear off and got to feel the full pitocin contractions, with the pitocin cranked up to the maximum level. I don't have anything to compare it to, but I know I don't ever want to experience that again.

Unfortunately, my induction ended in a c-section, but I don't think my case was the norm. I got to 9.5 cm and +2 and was thinking I would push soon, but then I started swelling shut from the trauma of being in labor for several days.

Just pitocin. It was my second, I was 40 weeks, dilated to 3ish and 80% effaced. All favorable. It worked very well. From start of pitocin to baby was 7 hours. Good luck!

@runnerd: wow I'm surprised your provider would go for that just at 40 weeks with all of the current research!

Cytotec/misoprostol placed vaginally at 40+10, I was barely 2cm, but having mild contractions. Placed at 10:30, had to be monitored for an hour or two. Then went with DH to get lunch, walked a few laps around the hospital, got back to my room with more intense contractions at 2:30, got in tub at 3:30, water broke, got epi at 5:30, delivered baby at 8:30! He was 9lbs 6oz

Both my girls it was pitocin, first dose of strep b meds, then they broke the water when they knew i could get my second round of antibiotics in. Both were 8-10 hrs from check in. I was 3 cm with DD1 and 5 cm with DD2.

I had pitocin w virtually no results for 3-4 hours...(went from 3.5 to maybe 4.5)...they broke my water and DD was out in less than an hour.

I was induced because of low amniotic fluid at 38w5d. 3 rounds of cervadil (12 hrs each), then I was finally ready for pitocin. Was on pitocin for 8-ish hrs, then pushed for 10 minutes.

LO2 came spontaneously at 38w2d.

I had pitocin w/DD1 after my water broke but labor didn't start. It was successful relatively short, and since I had an epidural before the pitocin, totally pain free. I did throw up after delivery, but no other complaints.

I went into labor with DD2 after a membrane sweep - that labor (and the sweep itself) was more painful, and very, very fast.

Given the choice To repeat either. I prefer the first one (pitocin). But I would think in your situation they'd want to try a membrane sweep - not breaking your water, just shaking things up- first! Good luck with whichever you decide!!!!

Induced at 39+4 due to low fluid levels. Was already 3cm and 70% and responded well to the Pitocin. Needed an epidural about 4-5 hours into it, contractions were then coming fast so they turned it off. Started pushing about 6 hours after that (so 12 hours after the Pitocin was first given), baby came 3 hours later.

Good luck! I was 3 cm/50%/-2 when I went in. They started pitocin and after about an hour I was 3/70%/-1 and they broke my water. It moved super quick after that and baby was born 2 hours later. The whole induction was 4 hours start to finish.

I had GD, so I was induced at 39 weeks and I was not effaced, not dilated, nothing. After two rounds of cervadil (sp?), I was like 3cm so I got epidural soon after, and also pitocin at some point too. The whole thing from start to finish, from the moment I was shoved a cervadil to being ready to push, went from 1am to 9pm the next day.

I have 5 days overdue and showing signs of pre-eclampsia, so I was sent to L&D.

They gave me one dose of Cytotec at about 2 PM, checked me a few hours later, realized I was much further along than they thought I was (I think 5 cm) and so instead of giving me another Cytotec dose they started Pitocin. I was also on Magnesium Sulfate for the pre-eclampsia issue.

The doc attempted to break my water that evening but it didn't really result in any big gush. At about 2 AM I sat up to have my epidural placed and that's when I started gushing everywhere, so I think my water broke at that point. My epidural wore off once overnight, so they re-dosed me and my entire lower half went numb at that point.

Labor continued to progress normally and by 9 AM I was ready to push. I delivered LO vaginally and then had a hemorrhage when I was trying to deliver the placenta. I was monitored in the delivery room for an additional 12 hours after birth (instead of moving to the recovery room right away).

Only one LO so no reports on any other deliveries
