Sophia/Sofia. When you hear the name, which spelling would you tend to assume? I think I prefer the former, but wonder if the latter makes more sense...
- We live in the northeast (NYC area)
- People tend to assume our last name is Italian (it's not, but it begins with "D apostrophe....."
- Sisters' names end in "-ley" and "-elle"
- Sisters are big Sofia the First fans...haha not that I'm willing to let a Disney character influence my choices, but well, you know....!

Sophia. How bad is it that my LO is a huge Sofia the 1st fan and I didn't realize until his thread that it's Sofia and not Sophia?!

@yoursilverlining: Right?!?! I was surprised as well - particularly given the fact that Disney test marketed the Sofia character using print stories rather than a pilot TV episode, and that the overwhelming preference in the US seems to be for "Sophia".
(I found this article recently while googling just exactly how Sofia "became a princess overnight", haha):

@PinkElephant: @yoursilverlining: isn't Sofia a Spanish Disney princess? I think it's common in the Spanish language to use "f" instead of "ph." Estefania aka Stephanie comes to mind in terms of f for ph.

When I hear it, I assume Sophia but that is because growing up a knew a few Sophias. But, I love Sofia!

I'm in the minority and assume Sofia. But my family/community is very Greek. All the Sofia's I know are spelled with the f and I have a sister named Stefanie. Sofia was on our short list of names spelled with an f, too.

I'm Greek too, and generally most Greek Sofia's are with an F, though all the other non-Greek girls I know are with a PH.

I would assume Sophia generally.

@Mrs. J: hmm, interesting! That's cool, thanks for sharing that. I never saw Sofia as part-Latina or with any Spanish heritage, but I also mostly try to ignore most of it when it's on in our house

@Mrs. J: That IS interesting. I never realized that she was intended to be Latina and/or Hispanic. I did notice that the episodes can be subtitled in Spanish, but my girls don't watch any other Disney show, so I had no idea if that was the norm or not.

I prefer Sophia but I know a few girls and women who are "Sofia." I think Sophia is the more anglo version and Sofia is the more Latin/Greek/Italian/Russian/etc. version because those languages don't have the "ph = f" sound.

I would assume Sophia in North America. I know a woman from Eastern Europe and she spells it Zofia.

If the kid is Hispanic, Sofia. Otherwise, Sophia. I teach and have taught so many Sophias!
