So I'm going to NY the end of the month and the weather over there is freaking me out. I live in the Seattle area where it never gets super cold for very long. I'm wondering if I can wear Hunter boots with extra thick socks instead of getting some heavy duty boots. I just don't have use for snow appropriate boots here but could keep wearing the Hunter boots after this trip. Am I going to freeze?

I wear mine in the snow but they aren't very warm. Be sure to buy the fleece inserts or warm socks or your toes will freeze!

I've heard that the tread on them doesn't do great on snow making them very slippery.

Hunter boots are HUGE in NYC! And that's usually what I break out in the snow. It usually isn't that cold so they work just fine, and snow melts fairly quickly since the city produces a lot of heat and the sidewalks are shoveled fairly quickly on big streets. There are often huuuuge puddles at the curb, so Hunters work well with sloshing through them!
That's if you're in the city though...If you aren't, you might need heavier duty boots...

They can be slippery, and they aren't very warm, but I think they would be okay for one trip. If this were a regular trip, I would buy better boots.

When I lived in NYC I always used them for the snow. I agree with @nana87 - there are so many puddles near curbs that the boots work well for getting through them. I call them slush puddles - you think they look sort of solid, but then you step through and your foot is submerged in 6 inches of water! Have fun in NYC!

I did that once when there was a huge snowstorm and I had nothing else to wear. Agree that you need something warm inside them!
Snow doesn't stick around very long though so unless it's just recently snowed there probably won't be much if any snow to walk through.

I would just wear those with thick socks. I used to walk to/from work and rain boots are fine in NYC. The snow gets plowed and melts quickly in the city with all the car and human traffic.

They definitely need warm socks! I find the treads to be useless on ice but if the sidewalks are clear they should be fine.

That's what I've done the past four years in Chicago. I've got the fleece liners. I'd like some warmer snow boots, but I hate to spend the money when this works well enough. It's how I justifies buying such expensive rain boots in the first place!

I actually wear rain boots (not Hunter) instead of Uggs w/ snow now because even after spraying water protection stuff on Uggs, being in the snow for a while still soaks through! So while rainboots + socks don't keep my feet AS warm, I rather have them dry!

I've been using my hunters this year for the snow with the fleece sock liners. If I'm out 'playing' in the snow with DD for a while then my feet get cold, but walking in and out of stores/my office/the house they are fine.

@locavore_mama: we're going for the Super Bowl! We're staying in Manhattan most of the time. We'll be outdoors almost all of Sunday. I bought some arctic weather socks for subzero temperatures that is highly rated by Alaskan fishermen. I may have to get a few more pairs...

@sandy: no freaking way!!!!! Make sure you have a good hat, gloves and a rain proof coat. Wear layers and buy some hot hands!

@rahlyrah: @rattles: how does the fleece liner affect the sizing? The socks I bought are so thick I'm pretty sure I will go up a size but maybe I won't have to do that if I wear the fleece inserts and regular thickish socks?

@locavore_mama: I bought a giant long puffy coat to wear but will have to get a poncho or something in case it rains/snows during the game. Definitely planning bringing several packs of hotties!

@sandy: Also bring a garbage bag to sit on in case the seats were wet beforehand from snow or rain. Steal a bunch of napkins from concession to dry the seats before you sit down.
I would go for thick socks (think hiking socks) over just fleece inserts. The Hunters will provide you no warmth whatsoever. Walking for 20 minutes in them is one thing. But you will be sitting still, outside in possibly sub zero weather for 3 hours. It is very important to keep your feet dry & warm!!!
Does your puffy coat have a hood?We had seasons for a few years and I live in upstate NY so I've sat through rain, subzero temps and a blizzard! I will try to think of more tips.
What are you wearing underneath? I highly recommend a Under Armour underlayer!
They sell hotties for boots too! More important the ones for hands!

I got this coat during a big sale a few weeks ago...it has fleexe lining the arms holes and the collar and the pockets... Super warm. And the hood is also fleece lined. It's super roomy so I'm planning to layer a ton and also bringing my Seahawks snuggle to wrap around me during the game. I bought new gloves and will layer those too. I bought some double layer long underwear off amazon that was pretty highly rated by cold weather people
Ok I need to buy some hunter boots and more arctic/subzero socks!

@sandy: I agree the hunters will provide you no warmth at all, even with fleece. I don't find fleece to help with warmth too much unless layered up. Make sure to wear some wool socks! For a little more, i would go with some Sorels. I have these and they work with temps just above 0. http://www.sorel.com/womens-tivoli-high-boot-NL1907.html
Also, doubling up socks will help (1 thin layer with a wool sock on top). Smartwool has GREAT winter socks.
Make sure to wear a hat!

@sandy: we're in upstate NY, too, and I have a pair of Hunters. I don't use them as my go-to for cold weather, but I've done it when I just don't want to deal with the snowboots any more. I would say use both fleece inserts and another pair of socks and foot warmers. It sounds like overkill, but you can always peel off layers if you get overheated.

@sandy: so much fun that you're going to the game! I want to say though, while there have def been some crazy cold/snowy spells, we've also had some really warm days. My dh didn't even wear a coat on sat during the day! I mean, you def will want one anyway for sitting outside that log, but you could get lucky and it could be like in the 40s again!

@sandy: I ONLY wear my hunter boots when it is snowing--I think they are fantastic in the snow. The traction isn't great, but if you buy welly socks (they are specifically made to go in hunter boots, they are fleece) you will stay super warm and dry. Literally, my feet sweat in them in freezing temps. I love my hunter boots!
The other brand I would recommend would be sorel.

I would also bring a blanket to sit on at the game. I've had to sit at Safeco field in October for a whole day and your tush gets coooooold. It will be 100x worse in NY in Feb!
Check Costco for Hunter boots! I've seen them at my Costco but I don't know if they are still there.

If you happen to see them at yours will you get them for me (black/grey but really any color is ok, size 5) and I will pay you for them. I'm going to see which Nordstrom has them. I may get the kids size 3 but they'll probably be mid-calf but they're only $70!
