This is never ending. My husband had his third surgery to reverse his colostomy but there were complications from his infection and the surgeries done prior, the surgeon had to do a small bowel resection due to necrotization. Right now his abdomen is open and will stay open until surgeon feels that the reversal and small bowel resection are secure and won't leak. So my husband is on a ventilator under heavy sedation. The surgeon will evaluate on Thursday and either do an abdominal wall fix and close him (if everything looks good) or he will do a loop ileiostomy (a less invasive colostomy basically) and then just stitch him up with repairing the abdominal wall, in which case we are facing further surgeries down the road. Hopes for a Christmas homecomings are gone.

What an absolute nightmare for him, you and your family. Sending lots of positive thoughts your way. Thankful you are at a stateside hospital now but cannot believe this nightmare hasn't ended for you.

Oh, this is such a sad update. I'm sorry he is still dealing with all of this and now in a state of constant surgery, essentially. My prayers are with you, I know you wanted him home for Christmas so badly.

@psw27: Thank you, just having a sounding board here is good, since I always end up crying when I talk to friends, family or co workers.
I'm flying down this weekend to see him again. They put a central line in last night to deliver TPN (total parenteral nutrition) as well as for blood transfusions as needed. The surgeon should be calling me tonight or early tomorrow to let me know what the next step is, the ileostomy or abdominal wall repair. I am trying to focus on appreciating that they are being cautious and methodical, but its is just so. damn. hard.

@SwanSong: totally random, but as a nurse, let me know if you have any medical questions. I have seen a lot of patients who they thought would never be discharged in a similar situation (with lower healing status to start with) sent home on normal feeds and they surprised everyone with their healing abilities. but always a process. thinking of you
