Back in Fort Lauderdale this weekend, but good news (knock on wood), after a series of minor surgeries this week, they were finally able to close up my husband's abdominal wound yesterday, they actually did the hernia surgery so hopefully he won't be looking at any further operations down the road. He was still sedated on the ventilator when I left him last night but they may start vent weaning him today. It's progress, it's agonizingly slow, but it's progress. Seeing him hooked up to all the machines is so hard, he will never remember me being here but it has been so healing just to hold his hand and talk to him.

Welp I figure it is time for an update. After my husband's abdomen was he developed a post-operative leak in in large intestine several days after, leading to another infection. He then had a stent placed via colonoscopy to help seal the leak, after which he sedated again for an additional 8 days. I went down this past weekend and he was taken out of sedation, he was very emotional and was at time delirious. I was hoping things would be on the up-n-up, but yesterday he developed another infection in his actual intestine, in addition to having an abscess in the area that the doctors in the Domincan Republic originally tried to do the appendectomy.
So that is where we are. I'm waiver between trying to focus on the positive and look forward to when he is home, and having a weekend away together when he better, but then my mind goes to really dark places like being a widow at 32 or when he comes home him just not being himself anymore. Trying so hard to hold it together.

@SwanSong: how scary. Are your husband's parents still with him? Poor guy. Are the doctors saying everything they can clear these infections and then he should recover? This must be very hard on you. How are your kids taking it? Do they understand?

@SwanSong: I'm sure you are just so frustrated and frightened at this point. What are the doctors telling you about recovery now?

@SwanSong: This is so frustrating and scary. Are you happy with the medical care he is receiving where he is? Is there any chance of a transfer closer to where you live?

@Anagram: His brother is with him right now. Infectious control has revamped his antibiotics and antifungals, the problems the strains are becoming resistant to the usual medications. My 11 month old is fine but my three year old is really struggling, he asks me at 20 times a day when Papa is coming home and I just dont have an answer, I dont want to scare him so i try to answer as honestly but vaguely as possible.

@mediagirl: honestly, I haven't asked about a time frame, because every time I do it gets pushed back. At this point we have all the time in the world so long as he gets better.
@winniebee: despite all the set backs I am happy with his care, his body has just been through so much, especially since the initial sepsis after his surgery in the DR, it can only handle so much.

@littlejoy: thank you, my family, friends and co workers have been amazing. The ups and downs have been really hard and I am just so drained emotionally. Couple the worry for my husband with mommy guilt that my kids arent getting the best "me," plus my milk supply has plummeted, I am just worn out.
