Has anyone had a hysteroscopy? Polypectomy? I've had premenstrual spotting since I got my period back after weaning DD. I finally saw a GYN instead of my general practitioner and he wants to do a hysteroscopy to look for polyps and take them out if he finds them. He does it under general anesthesia at the hospital. I'm a little scared but would love to find a solution to my spotting!
What was your experience like if you had one?

I had a hysteroscopy in 2013, I’m combination with a laporoscopy. It was my first surgery and I was terrified but actually it wasn’t bad at all. I have three tiny scars (so tiny that I actually can’t even find them any more). They told me to take a week off work and I remember the weekend was kind of miserable, mainly because I had really bad shoulder pain from the gas, but by 3 days post surgery I felt basically fine.

@Dahlia: a hysteroscopy is a standard procedure before starting fertility treatments so I had one to clear me for IVF. They insert dye and track it through xray to make sure all your "plumbing" is clear to carry a baby. I remember it being borderline painful, certainly uncomfortable since they insert a catheter in your cervix. They recommended advil a while before but it was still really uncomfortable. But then it was over quickly and I has a teeny bit of spotting but nothing crazy.

@Mrs. Pajamas: what you described is a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) not a hysteroscopy.
@Dahlia: do you have any other symptoms? I have a lot of spotting, sometimes before a period, sometimes all I get is spotting and never have a period. My gyn has never recommended any type of surgery. But I do have PCOS, so I wonder if that is why?

@KT326: Nope, just 3-4 days of spotting and then a 5-6 day period, so usually about 8-10 days of bleeding a month. I never had this before DD. My thyroid, prolactin, and progesterone tests have come back fine. Transvaginal ultrasound showed no fibroids or cysts.
At this point they've told me it's either polyps or an unknown hormonal imbalance. Hysteroscopy will either confirm or rule out polyps. Apparently it's a very minor procedure, but I'm a chicken!

I am experiencing exactly this after my second baby. I am spotting 5 days before my period starts and then a 5-6 day period. On top of that, I am spotting mid cycle.
All of my tests came back fine, except for the free testosterone which came back high. My doctor says it's a sign of PCOS and suggested going back on the pill to regulate my period.

@bubbletrouble: I'm sorry you're having the same problem! The only hormone I've had checked is my day 21 progesterone, which was fine. If the hysteroscopy doesn't find anything I will ask to have my other levels checked too.
I did try two different bc pills over the winter. They made my pre-period spotting go away, but I got more days of mid-cycle spotting so really no different overall. I may just need to keep trying until I find the right one.
Hope you get some relief soon, the spotting is maddening!

Updating in case anyone looks into this later, I always hated finding posts like this and not getting the final answer!
It was super duper easy. I didn't even realize the sedation had started and then woke up awhile later in the recovery room. I was groggy for the first hour or so, but could walk around on my own. I've been sleepy this afternoon, but no pain or cramping, and just light bleeding. It's been about 5 hours now and aside from wanting a nap I feel totally clear headed.
Not sure if the doctor found polyps or not; I was still out when he came and talked to DH and DH either didn't understand or doesn't remember what the doctor said beyond "it went just fine." All in all, don't be afraid of a hysteroscopy with d and c and if your dr. recommends it!
