Ha! Being a sheltered homeschooler (that would be a total homeschooler, not simply some who is homeschooled, ie, educated at home), I can list way more than 5 things, although I'm working on knocking that number down, lol.
1. Never seen Star Wars, or any other cult classics, for that matter.

@Mrs. Pen: Haha, not in my homeschool circle! If you were homeschooled, you know the ones I mean- the wide-eyed, awkward ones wearing those horrid jumpers (frumpers) and long skirts at the homeschool conventions. We were lucky fs our family owned a VCR and were allowed to watch The Sound Of Music, lol.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@FarmWifeGina: bahhahaha omg you make me laugh. haha yes I know the ones! I made it my life's mission as a kid to destroy every homeschooler stereotype set upon me. Most people were shocked when they discovered I was homeschooled because I was so "normal".
@sorrycharlie: omg you don't even recognize them?! where have you been!! yeah probably a fancy whoopie pie - but I've never had one lol.
@Alivoo01: I'll top that: I've never even been drunk!
pear / 1571 posts
@Mrs. Pen: Lol, yeah, most people that know me now would never guess that I was homeschooled if I don't tell them, even though, ooft, I was pretty dang stereotypical. But I honestly didnt know any different. I was raised to think i was better than the rest of the world for being that way. But I've come a long way towards "normalcy" in the last 7 years.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@FarmWifeGina: I was really involved in my church which had a great kids/youth ministry of 300+ kids and the majority of them went to the public high school so 90% of my friends were not homeschooled and I liked it that way so I guess there was no "normal" for me - each and every family I knew did things differently. I liked learning that early on there is no one "right" way to do things.
pear / 1571 posts
@Mrs. Pen: Yeah...we were too good to be allowed to mingle with the filth and bad influences of any church youth group... *sigh*
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@FarmWifeGina: oh boy!!
When I started college I met a guy there who was 18 and had been homeschooled his whole life. His parents were so strict that he wasn't even allowed to have friends over or go to his friends' houses because of the risk of being "corrupted". They didn't have TV And he said radio was a treat. At 18 he still had to call his mom the moment he made it to school, and the moment he left. I asked him once if he wanted to come to the Christian group on campus and he said he couldn't that day because he had to ask his mom.
(sighs)

pear / 1571 posts
@Mrs. Pen: Macaroons are nommy. But then, I've never had a macaron either, HA!
Yeah, I was that kind of homeschooler, the kind that couldn't do anything without express permission and most of the time that permission wasn't going to be granted, so there wasn't much point in even asking. And I know of plenty of homeschool families who have kids my age and older that still live at home with no higher education, boys work in the dad's business and the girls "training to be keepers at home." *massive eyeroll* Lol, I'll shut up now.

@FarmWifeGina: I have been reading all your responses because I have just never heard of this before (I guess I've heard of home schooling, but not to the degree you're talking about)!! I'm curious, did you ever feel like rebelling? or did you rebel? I hope I'm not being nosy, I'm genuinely curious.

@.twist.: If you've ever watched 19 Kids And Counting, you've heard of it, you just didn't know it, lol. Really, the whole point of being so sheltered is so you don't rebel, so you don't know what else is out there. And if it's done right, no, you don't question what your parents tell you, you would never dream of really defying them. I didn't until other people (my grandparents, several aunts and uncles who don't ascribe to the lifestyle) told me I could think for myself and make up my own mind. It blew my mind the day my aunt told me that I was being manipulated and brainwashed and that that was the equivalent of mental abuse (there was other abuse issues coming up at the same time, not that that happens in every conservative homeschooling family, but you'd be surprised). I did rebel then and left home when I was 17 and went to live with my grandparents and began learning to think for myself. It took a LONG time to break some of those thought patterns and core beliefs and realize that I wasn't any better than anyone else just because I was going to let God plan my family size and have a billion kids or because I wasn't going to date around, blah, blah, blah and that it was ok not to believe in those things.
So sorry for the hijack, @Mrs. Pen!
