Said my friend who's wife is pregnant. Of course I asked for this secret, and his answer was sign language because it helps them communicate. I think that could be true for earlier years, but at 20 months my lo communicates pretty well through words and pointing . The problem is more that when she says she wants something and I don't want to give it to her (example-cookies before breakfast), she throws a fit.
What do you think? Does sign language help with the terrible twos?

My two year old was wonderful, it was when she turned three that things went crazy..... grrr the terrible threes
and sign language wouldn't help her! She communicates perfectly.

LOL... right, WHY DIDNT ANYONE EVER THINK OF THAT? I'm sure their baby will be signing their tantrums instead of screaming them.

My 2+ year old is extremely verbal and knows exactly how to ask for what she wants and throws the biggest fits in the world if I don't give it to her... so I highly doubt it's a communication/understanding issue!
If someone had the answer to the terrible two's, they would be a billionaire by now!!

Hahaha, after watching my two nephews who can communicate just fine, sign language is definitely not the answer.

i think perhaps it helps with communication frustrations but I don't think it is the total secret to the terrible 2s as a whole. they're learning so many things! like their place in the house, the world, how to communicate and learn (sharing, turn taking, etc)..

Nope! The terrible twos are developmental (and there is actually evidence that infant signing isn't very beneficial- an average period of a month when they can sign but not speak...though reviews on that are mixed!) During the terrible twos only one of the problems is a lack of vocabulary; they're also testing and learning boundaries, which is what it sounds like in your example. This is just my opinion..*disclaimer* I don't yet have a 2 y/o! (But neither does your friend unless they have an older kid!)

I agree that sign language was beneficial for us for a while but more in the age range of 10-18 months. Now she can talk and like you said its just complete meltdowns over nothing or because I refuse to bend to her demands.

Yeah, I agree sign language has been super helpful, but in no way does it stop the meltdowns!

*Cackle* They're going to have a shock!!! The only way to prevent the terrible twos is to adopt a three year old! Then you just have the terrible threes to deal with!!
