My bosses have both missed multiple birthdays because of their jobs. It really isn't a huge deal. The parents are the one who deal with the guilt but the kids aren't super phased. At least when they are young. I just wouldn't make a big deal about it beforehand because then they won't know to worry about it. Plan the party for the following weekend and hype it up. FaceTime on his actual birthday and have your SO plan something fun. Or maybe ask a friend if he can go to their house for a fun playdate. If it is when he's in school then I would send in a special treat.

Ps. one of the birthdays that was missed was a 5th birthday and my boss had me plan a bowling party + invited the whole class. It was a huge hit!!! My boss wasn't able to attend the actual birthday or the party but my nanny kid knew she was loved and knew that her parent wanted to be there.

I would also think your son would know the party would probably be on a weekend anyway, so I don't think it'll be a huge huge deal. It might be harder to explain away if it were on a Saturday or something but I think it'll be fine!
