Yup! So sad

I was at a funeral a few days ago and the deceased's son and his wife were both smoking afterward...right next to their 4-year-old. I understand that they must have been really stressed out so I tried not to judge too harshly, but I was pretty dismayed to see it.

Bugs me when I see it too!

I'm a former smoker with pretty little tolerance for people smoking around kids. I grew up around friends whose parents all smoked. I feel like it predisposed me to be a smoker. I don't have any evidence-based reasons for thinking that, but I do.

I openly yell at people for smoking around C.

This is one of the very few things I will judge for. There is no excuse to subject a child to your cigarette (or pipe or whatever) smoke. No excuse. None.

Oh yes, I judge and I judge hard.

One of the worst things about where I live in Austria is how much people smoke (2nd per capita smoking country in the world behind China!) with absolutely no regard for anyone around them. It is absolutely disgusting and I give people the death glare all of the time. Anytime we go out, especially to restaurants with a terrace, I always see parents lighting up around kids, which irritates me to no end. And of course their smoke always ends up wafting over to us.

I judge. When I was nine, I went to my Nana's house to stay and when we walked in, her lips were blue and she was barely breathing. If we hadn't shown up when we did, she would have died. Ever since, I have hated smoking with a passion and I will never smoke. I don't want it around my kids.

My mom smokes, but she always goes outside and wears a jacket so it's not on her clothes as much. My MIL smokes constantly inside and even around me when I visited at 16 weeks. It made me physically ill. She will not be allowed to smoke around our children.

I'm an ex smoker (2 years!!) so I know that it's a hard habit to break. I actually feel bad for smokers in general, it's so much more mental than physical. But to expose your children (or anyone's children) is pretty low and selfish.

In my province it's illegal to smoke in indoor public plaves or in cars with minors. It's even illegal to smoke at outdoor sporting parks when children are playing

I judge too! My parents both smoked in the house when I was young (my mum was on 80 per day while pregnant) - I remember my dad telling me to close the car window when he was smoking because "a bit of smoke won't kill you". Yeah, he died of lung cancer a year ago.

@Mrsjets: good for you! My DH is going on two years of quitting as well, after 10 years of being a smoker! It was a prerequisite of us having kids, and I'm so proud of him for quitting. You're awesome for going through that; I know it was so hard for him!

@Bookworm: aww thanks! I actually quit cold turkey because I wanted kids too I think it was easier for me because it was for a cause! Good for your DH, such a mature move! Thankfully mine has never smoked and loved me anyways!

I feel bad for smokers as well, and I'm always glad when there's an area designated for them that's not totally out of the way and tucked away from society. That way they can smoke (hopefully in peace and not all cramped and uncomfortably) and people who don't want the secondhand smoke exposure, like me, can stay away. I'm all about co-existing peacefully.

But I do judge caregivers who smoke around children. That's just not fair. The kids don't have the choice of moving away from the smoke.
