TMI warning but is it possible to leak amniotic fluid at 23 weeks? Or is there just more discharge starting around this time? The past few days I've been feeling a lot more "wet" and having bigger wet spots in my underwear that don't dry like discharge would. Usually if I leak pee its just a tiny drop, and this doesn't smell like urine, and happens even if I JUST went to the bathroom a minute before. I don't know if I'm just hyper-aware but I just FEEL like something is dripping constantly! My water broke with my first 2 kids, for one it was a huge gush and the other just a trickle, but I was full term at that point anyway.

Does it smell? When my water broke it had a very distinct smell. I would say either one is possible - slow leak or just increased discharge. You could get checked to be on the safe side or you can grab ph strips to check at home if you’d rather do that

@gotkimchi: It has A smell but not like urine or regular discharge if that makes sense, its sort of unique but I can't describe it! I didn't know you could test pH at home, maybe I'll try that, thanks!

I started leaking amniotic fluid at 28 weeks. I first thought I was just peeing. But after it going on for two days - and I was soaking through pads throughout the day and overnight - I was finally convinced to go to the ER and get tested. I was lucky that nothing happened in those two days -- i should have gone to the Dr. immediately!I highly recommend you do the same! or an urgent care at least. The worst that can happen is that they tell you it's nothing and you go back home.

@HappyBaker: the amniotic fluid smelled like semen to me, if you lie down for 30 minutes then stand up and leak that’s more likely to be amniotic fluid too so you can try that and see

I thought I was leaking around that same point in my pregnancy. I called my doctor and they recommended I go straight to L&D to get tested. It ended up just being more discharge, but I am so glad I went and got it checked.

I just laid down while putting DD to bed for about 20 minutes and there was no gush when I stood up, but I could feel it while laying there. It seems like certain movements make it worse (like squatting / bending over) which means maybe it really is just pee?
@Dahlia: @math.nerd: thank you for sharing! DH is unfortunately out of town for the night so I'll probably wait until tomorrow morning to give my doctor a call I guess. I just remember when my water broke and was a trickle and I was 40 weeks they didn't believe me so I have a feeling this early they might just think I'm nuts!

@HappyBaker: I’m also 23 weeks and dealing with way too much discharge, pregnancy does some weird shit to the body! I checked in with my midwife as to whether or not it could be thrush (i also have some irritation and itching but it is also ridiculously hot here!) but nothing came up when I had a swab tested so I’m buying plenty of panty liners and putting it in the “weird pregnancy shit” category!

@Kemma: Did they have you go in just to the office to get a swab tested? I realllllly don't want to go to L&D or the ER so I'm hoping if I call in the morning they can just check it in the office!

My water broke first with my first two so I think I was hyper aware and kept thinking I might be leaking with my third. If you have a bad feeling I’d definitely get checked, but I think it’s likely just an increase in discharge

I always get a lot more discharge in the second trimester. The first time around, I called the nurse line at my OB and they went through a series of questions to determine whether or not it was amniotic fluid. The main guideline was the amount... If you're soaking through more than a panty liner per hour, I think that was the guideline? Maybe every couple of hours?

@HappyBaker: I’m right ahead of you almost 25 weeks and I’ve definitely had an increase in the last week or two. I can feel it dripping out sometimes but it always dries white. I seriously have to change my underwear mid day! Haha total TMI. Definitely call if it’s just clear though. You definitely want to find out sooner rather than later if it is leaking fluid.

I’m touchy about 23 weeks since that is when I went into labor so I always like to tell people to just go in. Worst thing that happens is that you’re reassured it’s fine.

I had a small leak around 37 weeks and my OB was able to check me while I was in their office. Not to scare you but I had a leak that wasn’t actually detected when I went to L&D or the OB’s office and I was induced at 39 weeks due to low fluid. If the swab doesn’t show anything, also ask for an ultrasound to confirm fluid levels.

I had a lot of discharge with my 1st pregnancy (wore panty liners every day). But I would get it checked out just to be sure. My 2nd and 3rd babies came early because of low fluid so I’m more cautious about that. And with them, I didn’t notice any extra discharge.

Sometimes if the baby is sitting funny and I don’t focus on 100% emptying my bladder, a little pee comes out shortly after I’m done washing my hands. So annoying, and so glamorous. 🙄

I just posted almost the same thing. I’m 30 weeks. I’ll be calling my doctor tomorrow. Maybe this is normal? Will be nice to find out!

I hope everything is okay and you went to get checked. I was hyper paranoid with my second since my first came early - I got swabbed like 4-5 times I think but it never came back as fluid. Even the day I had my 2nd LO they said it wasn't fluid... he was born about 9 hours later!

@HappyBaker: I am so sorry! Are you contracting? I’ve read stories about people who lasted quite a long time after water breaking but I’m not sure if it was a full break. I delivered my son at 25 and 2 after going into labor at 23 (my water didn’t break until 25). So I’ve met lots of preemie parents since then and some with 23 weekers. Thinking of you and hoping for the best! I'm so glad you went in. I had a friend whose water bag had a slow leak for months but stayed pregnant, so it's very possible drs can stall labor.

For what it's worth, my small leak continued for a few weeks and I never actually went into labor on my own (unlike the labor that started on its own in late pregnancy with my son after my water broke). I ultimately had to be induced so here's hoping that baby keeps cooking for awhile yet.
