Based on the fact that all of my 2.5 year old's friends have been yelling "I need that!" right and left, I understand this is a phase that many toddlers go through.
Anything to do to minimize it? How long does it last? I NEED it to stop!

I really emphasized that no you want it and you can't always have everything you want. Not giving in will make it go away pretty quick...

I just repeat back, "Yes you really really want it. You need it!" but stay consistent about not giving in, if it's not something he can have. It probably really feels to her like she does need it, so I wouldn't invalidate that...

It happens as often with her friends as it does with me- I can try repeating it back when it's me and she "needs" my burp cloth or whatever (while spit up drips down my back), but when she and her friend are both shouting they NEED the same toy, not really sure how to help that one. Never mind that there are hundreds of other toys around of course.

@Foodnerd81: in the case of the toy sharing, I think it's best that the kids work it out between themselves. They'll eventually learn to share, or not share, and what the consequences are. Peers are excellent teachers in this regard.
As for everything else, I just sing "you can't always get what you want" and it instead turns the topic to my terrible voice and my son asks that I stop singing, lol.

@looch: yeah we usually let them work it out unless it's escalating too much. It's just annoying (well, as are a lot of things at this stage!)
