Hello,
Recently had new baby girl on May 21st, 2015. I love her more than anything, but I really never comprehended how hard a new born is. The round the clock feedings, truly blow my mind, don't know how I'm even functioning. Is this something other's feels as well?

Hugs. I felt the same way and many others do too. I don't think it's possible to understand it unless you've gone through it. It feels endless, but it will get better, I promise.

It's sooooo normal! The first few weeks are definitely the hardest. Just take it one day at a time, or even one feeding at a time. It does get easier eventually.

@Sylvia: Congrats on your baby! Yes, most people feel this way... your whole life will revolve around this little being and you're just living in survival mode. It gets better as they sleep a bit more and you get the swing of things, hang in there! Take breaks when you can, let people help, and just realize that it won't be so hard forever, or for very long even... deep breaths!

@Sylvia: yes -very normal! I remember thinking to myself "I cant believe they let me take this baby home"
I was very overwhelmed at first - but you will fall into a routine soon enough!Hang in there and congrats on your LO!

I found it got better after4 weeks. You start to get to know each other a bit and find your rhythm.

It's incredibly hard at first, and you can't really understand it until you've experienced it. I remember just watching other people with (older) kids and wondering how they were functioning when I felt like a zombie disaster. It gets SO much better

The first few weeks are SO hard! It's just such a dramatic change...suddenly having a tiny, helpless being that's wholly dependent on you for everything, all of the time. The first week I actually contemplated bringing him back to the hospital and telling them I just wasn't ready (it was a random, passing 2AM thought, but I had it).
Take it one hour at a time if you have to...it DOES get easier! And try to carve out a little bit of time for yourself. Crying or not I used to hand E over to DH so I could take a long shower every day. It's not much, but it made me feel a billion times better, and more like myself.

Yes, it is so demanding and so new! I am only 5 months in but that time already is becoming a blurrrr

Absolutely! I felt the same way. And I was blown away and totally incredulous when I asked my other first time mom friends if they were as dumbstruck by first time motherhood and they would say, "oh it hasn't been too bad". For me it was like my life turned over, it was the hardest thing and I went through so much turmoil. I didn't settle into motherhood until DD was 1 year old though of course it was getting gradually better. If you have help, it can make a huge difference. IF you have people you trust around you, I highly recommend you take up heir help. Get out of the house, go out for a coffee break, you will see light at the end of the newborn days tunnel. I was SHELL SHOCKED when we brought my son home. I was like "why did no one tell me it would be this hard and suck so much!!!!" And then I realized that people did tell me, I just chose not to listen/believe them
And you also just have no clue until you actually have one. No book or pep talk can prepare you.
I think that leading up to your first baby it's just such a "honeymoon" phase and it's hard to believe it'll be anything but amazing.Hang in there! I got sick of hearing it, but it DOES get better! 6 weeks when they start smiling is amazing. Just hang on for 6 weeks and then it'll keep getting better from there. For me each month was a significant improvement over the last. It's not like you wake up the next day and you're like "oh this is easier today!" But you'll slowly start to realize with passing time that it has gotten easier and you didn't realize it.
Newborn days suck! But it's worth it and one day when you're not expecting it you'll be missing pieces of the newborn days!

@gracecat: I second her advice! Take ANY offer of help you get. I turned it down for a while because I felt like I was failing if I needed to get away. Bad idea! Those small breaks for a walk or coffee or even grocery shopping without the stress of a baby helped immensely!

@lovehoneybee: I had that thought too! Except mine was about returning him the way I return shoes to zappos. I thought "wouldn't it be great if I could go to a website and select a reason and just send him back?" It was silly and fleeting but I definitely felt it!

Oh yes!! Hardest thing I have ever done! The funny thing is, not only does it get easier but the horror of the newborn period fades from your memory.... I remember wondering why anybody ever signs up to do it again and now I'm planning #2!
Hang in there mummy! You've got this! And if you ever need to vent or feel like you might be getting a bit depressed, please do come and talk to us here! I had PPD and I didn't realise until my friends here told me to get help!

I remember when DS was just a week old and I fell asleep while eating dinner. I was so so exhausted but it truly will get better - it doesn't seem like it now I know but these weeks will fly by and time will slow down at the same time. I've had the same reaction to motherhood as you do. Take any offers of help you can get.

It does suck, and seem impossible to make it some days. I know I had times where I would just cry because I didn't think I could do it, but now that my son is 9 months the newborn days are a blur. Plus, in a few weeks she'll look at you and smile and you'll just forget how exhausted you are. I'd just take it day by day and remember it will slowly but surely get better.
Being able to get some coffee (alone) or even just take a nice long shower definitely helps, too.

@Sylvia: I totally get what you mean! My son is 8 weeks tomorrow and it has already gotten so much better. He has a bit of a routine so things are more predictable and I'm consistently sleeping at night (with wake-ups). I found the routine and sleep have made a world of difference.

Yes! The beginning is very hard! I know for me, I felt like I never got a second to myself. The baby was either nursing every two hours, needed a diaper change, or wanted to be held. He rarely let me put him down and would scream if I tried to. I know it's hard, but they do outgrow that phase.

Oh yes, somewhere around 4.5 weeks I would wake up to nurse and just cry asking myself 'what was I thinking?' It will get much better though, much better.

Oh yeah, you're not alone! I mean, I knew it was going to be hard, but you def have to live it to really understand it! I think a lot of it is the pp hormones too.. I was a hysterical person, so emotional, so sensitive, etc!

Yup, I think more people than not feel that way unless you have tons of help maybe!! It does get much much easier and much more fun too!

It's definitely hard but the biggest thing I took from it and applied when I had my second was to just embrace / accept it and stop fighting it! It WILL pass and it will get easier and believe it or not, you probably will miss it at some point in the future!

You just can't comprehend it until you live it! But I have to say as time passes it gets easier. I've done it twice now and realize it's a phase that passes. It went so much faster the second time because I knew it eventually would end!

@Sylvia: the newborn stage was insanely hard! LO wanted to nurse 24/7 and ate at least every hour and a half and it took that long! It WILL get better. Plus she didn't sleep... and screamed a lot.

I seriously hated life for the first 4 weeks. And it wasn't due to hormones or PPD or any of that stuff. It was because life with a newborn SUCKS a lot of the time. For me it started to get a lot better at 6 weeks when LO started smiling. Just that little bit of "give back" makes all the other crap seem so much better. It just got progressively better from there. Hang in there mama

@Sylvia: Yes! I had my baby girl May 24! I hadn't planned on breastfeeding, but I tried it and loved it. Er, maybe those we just the feel good hormones, because now at one week in of on demand nursing and cluster feeding- I'm ready to grab that jar of formula. For me, it's the constant cluster feeding. Someone make it stop! Oh- and I can't get full no matter how many fruits and snacks I eat! I feel drained. No advice since I had my baby girl 3 days after you- but know you're not alone!!

@dc yoga bee: avocado everyday in a wrap with chicken breast. The combination of protein and good fat was the only thing that kept me sated for a decent amount of time.

@plantains: That sounds tasty! I've been doing pbj, and a grilled cheese for lunch. Still hungry! I'll send DH out for some avocados. Oh, and every time I eat I leak like a faucet lol!
