Do/did you eat ice cream while pregnant? I'm talking about fresh ice cream from a parlour, not boxed stuff from the grocery. I was reading that you shouldn't eat homemade ice cream because raw eggs are used. There are so many amazing ice cream places where I live and it's my favourite summer treat! Is it really a big risk... and did you stick to no ice cream?

Would not hesitate at all. Yum! Also every time I've made ice cream the eggs have been cooked in a custard.

That was the one food rule I didn't follow. I love soft serve and local ice cream. I didn't eat as often as I'd like since I had GD when I was pregnant in the summer but still enjoyed it occasionally.

I ate ice cream from the grocery store (Breyer's) and from local parlors. I stayed away from soft-serve.

I ate a lot of ice cream while pregnant
(I also ate raw cookie dough and over-easy eggs, although generally local eggs which have a lower rate of contamination. I decided eggs weren't something I was going to stress over too much.)

I didn't think anything of it. I think I even had soft-serve, though I probably won't for my next pregnancy, just because I'm a germ-a-phobe and the machines are supposedly hard to clean out.
I wouldn't hesitate to have hard serve, locally made ice cream. I'm actually pretty skeptical that any ice cream around here even has raw eggs in it. Wouldn't they have to advertise that, especially for young children and the elderly? I'm not sure I buy that.

Ice cream was never on the do not eat list for me. Only cold cuts, sushi, and undercooked meat.

The eggs are not raw, they're "tempered" into a custard. So I wouldn't worry! I think the soft serve thing has to do with the cleanliness of the machines.

haha thank you everyone! I'm definitely going to indulge after reading your comments. I did call a couple of nearby places and they just seemed clueless.. "yah, I think we use raw eggs"... Ugh. Whatever, seems pretty low risk. To be safe for tonight, I just went out to grab a pint of ben and jerry's. Got home and immediately started to feel queasy and exhausted and bloated and had to put it in the freezer. Ha! Oh well, maybe it will be tomorrow's breakfast.

I think that the "do not eat" list is kinda getting out of hand. I definitely don't think twice about having ice cream! Including soft serve.

I did not follow this rule, lol.
DQ was a craving, and DD is fine. It's not about the icecream itself, it's about the possibility the machine isn't properly clean, which is relevant because of the ingredients.

I ate a lot of frozen yogurt while pregnant, key lime was my biggest craving. I had never heard of the listeria issue. Nothing bad happened, but if I were to ever be pregnant again, I think I'd stick to hard serve instead of soft serve/frozen yogurt.

@Goldengirl: When we make homemade ice cream, we never use eggs. The heaviest cream around, but never eggs. Perhaps because we make gelato recipes and not ice cream recipes. Hmmm, that's a potentially interesting culinary difference I never knew about... My point is that you might have more luck with places that sell gelato vs. ice cream, if you were trying to avoid it.

I wouldn't worry. Realistically, if you were to get sick (which is a big IF), sure you would feel crappy but that sickness would not transfer over to the baby so no need to worry.

@Goldengirl: I avoid soft serve whilst pregnant and any icecream that isnt pasteurized, I also avoid flavors that will have raw eggs such as cookie dough
The issue with softserve is the listeria risk from the machines not being thoroughly cleaned out

Ice cream is made with raw eggs there? I've never made ice cream but I have seen it made on numerous cooking shows and they have always been cooked.
As for ice cream, I would eat it. I had soft serve while I was pregnant. Everything in moderation was what my OB said. I even had a bite of sushi while pregnant.

@Mrsbells: yes, exactly...you have to trust your place to know they have enough traffic to be draining the machines on a regular basis. Otherwise, just ewwwwwww!

@Mrsbells: @looch: I worked at a fast food place as a teenager, and those ice cream machines get so nasty, so fast. I also wouldn't order sweet tea from most places b/c those often don't get cleaned as well as they need!

I eat it and wouldn't worry about the eggs thing.
From what I've read, listeria (the soft serve thing) is a much scarier issue than salmonella (raw eggs). Salmonella will get you sick, which stinks, but it's less likely to hurt the baby, whereas listeria definitely causes miscarriages and stillbirths. So I do avoid soft serve (just in case) but I wouldn't worry about normal ice cream from an ice cream shop.

i was seriously grossed out by how disgusting it was in there. the icecream gets stuck around all the tubing yuck
also equally gross is the inside of the cheese machines at the movies -
absolutely! i didn't eat soft serve because I guess it's hard to clean the machines.

I totally forgot and had soft serve yesterday. Oops. I didn't realize regular ice cream was a problem too. I'd think they'd have to put up warnings if they use raw eggs.

Homemade ice cream should be fine- they make cook the eggs into a custard. My doc said soft serve is just off limits because the machines can get really moldy and they aren't cleaned as well as they should be.(as well as Blizzards and Slurpees/ anything that comes out of a machine that you can't see inside)
