I find that whenever there are threads on mat/parental leave, a lot of the American bees are so surprised by how much better policies are in other countries.
If it wasn't for HB, would you be aware/informed? More/less upset?

I would. I work for an international company and it's come up in talking with some of my colleagues who work overseas. Plus, I feel like there are many articles that are written about it.

Nope I wouldn't have a clue. When it comes to day to day living I haven't spent much time learning about other countries.

I would. I used to work for a foreign government when I lived in the US and was covered under their maternity policies. I also have family in another country. Now that I live abroad, I've met tons of women from different places with different stories about mat leave.

Probably not as much detail, but I see a lot of articles about other countries' maternity leave policies on my yahoo feed, so I feel like I would know some.

I would, only because I feel like it's been brought up a lot recently with the Democratic nominees.

I think I would but for Canada only. We have cousins who live in Canada and we talk about it at family gatherings.

I'd have a rough idea, in large part because it pisses me off how much ours sucks compared to other countries

Yes, I follow a couple other places where it has been mentioned like the New York Times's parenting blogs.

I read all of a Cup of Jo's guest blog posts on Motherhood Around the World. It really opened my eyes to other countries family-friendly policies, so much better than those of the US.
I also read the news daily and NYT discusses it. Sanders does too, in his debate performances. As does Clinton.

I work for a global company, so yes I would be aware. I also think it is talked about pretty frequently in the news. I think our culture towards parenting is so different.
This may be specific to my company but a handful of my female European colleagues are nasty and difficult to deal with- my boss told me it is because they are very defensive about people thinking they'll get pregnant and be out of work for an extended time so they're not taken seriously. I have no idea how valid that is because I've never worked over there and I'm not close enough to it. I know I wasn't treated great after my own short US maternity leave and it didn't make me feel great- left that company shortly after.

I would because of family and friends who are from or living in the US, Finland, the UK.

Yes ... I work with a lot of Canadian clients, and none of them could believe that DH & I didn't get a lengthy paid leave when LO was born.

I work in public policy (not related to family leave) so I make it a point to be informed about most related issues, so yes I would know from reading articles. I don't actually think I have learned anything on that particular topic from HB.

I would have absolutely no idea. I was completely shocked when I read on here that a year's maternity leave isn't the standard in all 1st world countries. Appalled.

I think I would know a little more as there have been several articles I've seen comparing the birth and postpartum experiences in other countries in a few news outlets.

Aware but not quite as informed. I follow several feminist pages on FB and it's mentioned periodically.

Yes! There have been so many articles written on the subject. I do think it's time to stand up to our local representatives and try to change things. Is there a lobbying group for better family leave? I'd totally contribute.

I guess i should add that i probably wouldn't have known that 6 weeks is the bare minimum in the US!

I would but I was an American who was raised primarily overseas. So I grew up knowing how little Americans in general support breastfeeding and parental leave.

I knew that other countries' policies were better for mat leave than the US, but I didn't know the extent. I'm like seriously considering lobbying for change from what I've heard on HB. It's ridiculous that we get nothing paid and other 1st world countries get very nice paid leaves!

I would, but only because I live abroad.
@MOMTOLITTLEB: I think that's really odd that your boss said that. I'm an American living in Scandinavia and I've noticed that the women around here can seem a little difficult, only because they don't have the same social pressures on having to be "agreeable". Women seem to be less judged on their opinions. As for not being taken seriously because of maternity leave -- that's the first I've heard about it! It's considered a right here. No one would consider it a bad thing, least of all for the companies because it's a way of life - companies deal.

I see a decent amount of stuff on facebook, so I would know quite a bit.
I definitely know more specifics about Canadian leave from the friends I've made here!

Yes -- mostly from having lived in the UK for a few years, but also from living in NYC and knowing people from all over the world.
grapefruit / 4361 posts
I would, but that's because I studied gender issues in history as my senior capstone for college.
pomegranate / 3411 posts
it was probably through wedding bee/hellobee that i learned of the US's policies and was shocked. And I continued to be more shocked/disturbed during my year long mat leave when i really understood the impact.
apricot / 378 posts
Yes - I work for a global company and very jealous of coworker's leave policies
