But you don't have one in return, how do you handle it? I have a feeling a friend stopping by today will have something small for LO (just a suspicion), but we don't have anything for their LO. They just asked us a few minutes if they could stop by real quick, so going out and getting something in case isn't an option. What do you do in these situations?

agh, I hate this. i just act gracious and say thank you, and then next time I see them try to grab something small! a lot of times it makes people happy just to give, so I try not to worry - even though I am a people-pleaser by nature

Ugh this is a tricky situation! I would just really fawn over the gift and really express how awesome it is and also get their LO a gift down the road.

I hate being in this situation
I've started keeping some small rather generic gifts on hand (even in my bag around the holidays!) after being caught out a few times. It's so tricky, I never want to be the one to START the kids gift-giving frenzy, so I feel like I always need to be ready to reciprocate!Maybe say nothing but thanks now and just give something the next time you see them, saying Santa wasn't quite ready yet when they stopped by....or do a little something at the next holiday (lunar new year, valentines ). If you really feel badly, is there anything you have set aside for LO you can give them now and replace for your own child later?

I don't worry about it, honestly. I know if I gave someone a gift for their LO, I wouldn't be expecting anything in return or even think twice about the fact they hadn't gotten anything for my LO. I give gifts because I like to. I just assume others feel similarly (though I know it's probably not true 100%).

I would just graciously accept and express your excitement, etc. and then just going forward get their LO a gift too. Some people just love giving gifts and give to everyone they know. If I wanted to get a gift for someone's LO, I would not want them to feel obligated and run out an buy something for my LO!

This is why I bake too much over the holidays. I always have spare cookies on hand to plate up and send home with them.
But, otherwise, just say thanks!She might have waited until the last minute so that you wouldn't be able to return the favor.

@Dandelion: yup! I have 8 trays/tins of cookies/daintiest in the freezer for this reason - combined with a hand writen card it's a thoughtful gift
