The thread about chores made me think of this. Do you ever teach your kid a lesson even if it costs you money?
When my bro got his first cell phone as a teen he promised to cut the lawn, which would have meant my mom no longer needed to pay for a lawn service. He may have cut the lawn 2 or 3 times with a lot of prompting before my mom gave up. She didn't confiscate the phone because the cost to get out of the contract was high. In this case my mom did not teach him a lesson- honor your commitments.
Some younger kid examples would be...
Bad behavior means cancelling a pre planned outting (sunk costs would tickets or fees)
Bad grades means they no longer can participate in a sport/ extracurricular activity (sunk costs would be uniform, activity fees)
