DH adopted our last pup before I was around, and he kept his name. We decided that we'd only change our new puppy's name if we absolutely hated it. We don't hate it, and she answers to it already, so it stays.

If it were a dog, I'd keep it.
If it were a cat, i'd change it. My cats never answered to their names!

We could have changed it, because she was just a puppy, but we kept it Most of the shelters around here just make up random names, though, so if we hadn't liked it, we definitely would have changed it.

We renamed both of our cats. To be fair, their shelter names were "fry daddy" and "Jackie sparrow". Not the best names!
pear / 1895 posts
@Pepper: lol. Yeah, I'd change those, too!
We've adopted two cats and kept their names. Sort of. We ended up calling the first cat "Kitty", so that's what she answers to now. I felt weird about changing their names, for whatever reason! But yeah, if their names had've been Fry Daddy and Jackie Sparrow, I would've changed them!

Yep! Shelter name Piper and we renamed her Mady.
I didn't mind piper but DH didn't love it

Shelter cat was named Tai Chi when I got her. Changed it to Darla.

Yep, when we got our kitten, the shelter had gone through a car phase and she was named "Acura." We renamed her Matilda.

@TurtleDoves: Ha. Sometimes we wonder if our cat totally understands us ... Just chooses to ignore it all!

We changed Nina to Clover and Demi to Thumper.

Entries in a cat's journal:
DAY 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another house plant.
DAY 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair...must try this on their bed.
DAY 765 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was...Hmmm. Not working according to plan.
DAY 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time, however, it included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could invent such a liquid? My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.
DAY 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise. More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.
DAY 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird, on the other hand, has got to be an informant, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured. But I can wait; it is only a matter of time......

Well the people who dropped off our cat at the shelter had named HIM Kiki, so we definitely changed it.

Shelter name was Scooter, renamed her to Greta
Shelter name was Harley, renamed him to Harvey

The first dog were studied from the humane society we kept her name. We seriously considered changing it though as we had our ideal name in mind. We had to sadly put her down in Nov. and we adopted another puppy and we changed her name to our original name. So it worked out I guessin the end. Our current dog is part of a rescue group and they name the dogs in themes. We was the cereal group...... So we were absolutely changing it from a common brand of cereal.

When we adopted her, her name was "Fancy". We promptly changed it to Hailey.

My cats name was Elvis but that's my sisters cats name (and I don't really like it) so we changed it to Cheeto because he's orange.

Yes we adopted a mini poodle called Imogen and they shortened it and called her Immie. All our pets have "M" names, so we renamed her Minnie. Same sound so she didn't get too confused, she answers to it, it keeps our tradition and it suits her much better

Our little rescue dog had two previous name. The group that rescued him called him Angel. Our friend we got him from called him Warren. We call him BooBoo. Poor guy didn't respond to anything for a while.
And because he's just so stinkin' cute

One dog was nameless at the shelter so we named her Rags. The other dog was named Chewbacca by the person who dropped him off at the shelter. They renamed him Winston, which is what we call him. He still will respond to Chewy though!

We renamed our guy, but we adopted him as a puppy (9 weeks) so I don't think he had any idea what his name was.

Yep. With every pup. Not against keeping their name so long as we like it.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
Yup, the shelter gave my dog the name 'Flower.' I think it was from a list of names the shelter had and that was one available. I don't think my dog was known as that name before coming to the shelter.

@PointeShoesTutus: "he's just so stinkin' cute." Yup, so cute!! I want another dog like yours.

We did! Our puppy's name was Taco when we got him, but we renamed him Leroy. While Taco is a cute name, we like people names for pets. He never answered to Taco anyway.

@bluestriped bee: thanks! He's just the sweetest thing. It's so hard to believe someone gave him up (and likely abused him based on his behavior when we first got him).
bananas / 9118 posts
I liked it, so I kept it (this was before my husband was in the picture) although my husband has a million nicknames for him.
pomelo / 5321 posts
We kept our dog's name. He was 4 or 5 when we got him and answered to his name so we didn't think it was a good idea to try changing it. The name really fits him though.
GOLD / papaya / 10166 posts
One of them was named "possum" so we changed it. The other had a perfect name for his personality so we kept it.
pomelo / 5257 posts
We kept our cats' names. Partially because we're just not very creative with pet names, but also because there was a bit of time for both of them between when we picked them out to adopt and when we were told we could actually take them home. They're both rescues, but we had to have home visits and stuff. In that time we'd been referring to them by the names they already had, so I think it would have seemed weird to change them after that!
grapefruit / 4823 posts
We kept our cats name, but hanged the spelling. I don't think she noticed
pineapple / 12526 posts
We've only ever NOT changed a name once, and we still changed the spelling. Her name was Chloe but the previous owners apparently decided it was spelled Cloie... so stupid.
