I'm curious about all the moms who left the working field to become SAH. What did you do before? Would you ever go back or would you go back to work to do something else someday?

I have my MPH, but I was in law school when I got married.
Took a leave of absence to move out of state.
I was working at a law firm and doing private tutoring while in school.
Once I moved out to GA I worked at a real estate law firm before I became a SAHM!
edit: I plan on staying at home until my last one is off to college. I'll probably volunteer or find something to keep myself busy. Maybe go back to school to get my degree? Not sure.

I worked in communications, most recently as the project manager for the strategic global marketing department at a university.
I would think about working again when kid(s) are older, but would definitely consider something else.

We were married pretty young, so I was just out of college and working in retail. I quit in June to move to the UK, got pregnant in July and then just didn't get a job after we moved. So I was at home during my pregnancy and have been for her first year.
I will be getting a job in the next few months though.

I had just finished my MA in analytical linguistics and was teaching at a special centre for children with learning disabilities. we'll see what happens down the road! right now we're planning to pump out 3 or 4 kids in a shortish period of time and then i'll maybe go back to work when they're in school. so far we have a 9 month old and one on the way

@zippylef: we must have kids the same age! Mine are almost a year....
I am a CPA. Will probably go back when the kids go to school. Although I wouldn't mind taking courses for photography...

I have a master's in social work and spent six years working in child protection, primarily with children with disabilities, in the UK and Australia. I took a hiatus from social work and was accepted into a highly selective teaching program in the US with a not for profit organisation and taught middle school for two years before getting married.
I'd just landed a job back in the social work field, but hadn't started yet, when I simultaneously got pregnant and found out we'd be moving six hours away for DH's job, so I turned the job down.
So technically, I haven't worked since shortly before our wedding, with pregnancy following three months later. I don't plan on returning to work until all of our children (LO and the two we hope to still have) are in school full time.

I was a volunteer coordinator for a local nonprofit. Liked the job but earned far too little to justify going back to work and signing my check (and then some) over to a daycare/nanny. Plus I feel lucky that I'm able to be home - I know it's something not everyone can do (nor does everyone want to - but it works for me for now). I will probably go back to work doing SOMETHING at some point, likely when our last child is in school full time. No idea what I'll want to do by then.

I was a nanny! Then before that I went to school for medical assisting but never ended up getting a job in my field. I also worked in a daycare.

I have a master's in mental health counseling, and I was working in a substance abuse outpatient center immediately prior to LO being born. I've also worked with chronically mentally ill adults in the past. I hope to eventually find something part time working for a non-profit!

I worked in a marketing agency in digital media and was laid off before we decided to get pregnant and start our family. I was unemployed for about 3 years. This is the first time I've EVER not had a job (except the 2 weeks after college graduation I took off before starting my first job) and I was determined to never return to my industry of digital media.
I went back to work when Wagon Jr. was 18 months and I did go back into digital media!! Except the one big difference is that I went from the agency side to the internal side... AND I'm in non profit. That has made all the difference and I'm much much much happier now. I don't think I'll ever go back to the agency side.

I worked in event/volunteer management for a nonprofit - we moved for DH's work and knew we were moving again in a year and I wasn't able to find work fast enough and then got pregnant. I will definitely go back to nonprofit work - but hopefully part-time once LO is in school.

I worked for the federal government. I may go back at some point, but probably not to the same office or branch, for that matter.

I was a post-doc in a biology field. I teach and write a bit now. But we're moving around a lot and my husband works a lot and I wasn't happy where I was (I like research but the politics were too intense) so I've been really happy to have this time to spend with LO, I felt like a negativity cloud had been lifted from my life. I'll probably go back to work full-time but I'm definitely going to be very picky about where so it might not be for a bit.

I was an attorney (worked for the govt). I didn't love it so it wasn't too difficult for me to leave it. Ill prob go back to work when LO is in elementary school but I doubt it'll be law...

I was also an attorney (for 8+ years!) practicing general civil litigation (insurance coverage, real estate, contract disputes, etc)...I didn't love the work but felt like I should keep practicing b/c I had all my student loans from law school. I am so so so so blessed that my husband supports my choice to be a SAHM...I LOVE IT! People are always asking me how I get so much done everyday and I tell them that I don't have an office job so I put the same effort into being a SAHM...my house is not perfectly clean and far from being beautifully decorated, but it is well organized and well stocked with food

I was in human resources in the public sector. I didn't really like it, and I was in grad school at the same time, so we decided I'd stag home from the time DS was born until I finished my Masters. I graduate in August and hope to go back to work part-time sometime next year. I love being home with the kids, but I'm also very passionate and excited about my (new) career field. I will probably stay part-time for a while but eventually go back to full-time work.
