I'm looking to buy a NICE pair of boots and we've only got budget for one pair. So I have to make it count! What style do you think is the most versatile? Tall, short, black, brown?

I have these tall Fryes in both black and tan. On this site they are super cheap (for Frye)! http://www.6pm.com/frye-jane-14l-stitch~2
I've had the tan ones for 5 years and bought the black ones last year. It's a discontinued style, but they are super comfortable from day 1 and I love that you can easily dress them up or down.

I have tall black and brown boots and I wear the brown ones so much more! Some of that I think is the style but I also think they look better with dark wash jeans which I wear most of the time.

I would do a tall cognac style riding boot, you can wear with black and brown.

I have these and they're my favorite pair because they go with just about everything.

I think gray ankle boots would be most versatile... maybe with a inch and a half heel.

Right now I would wear short (above the ankle) boots the most, but I think tall, knee high boots in black or medium brown will never go out of style.
This is assuming you already have or do not need good winter/snow boots.

I have the Archive boots from Madewell in "English Saddle" (or Cognac, in my opinion) and I LOVE them. They've held up well for 3 years now and look brand new whenever I polish them (okay, whenever I ask my husband to do it for me). I like them more than the Frye boots I picked up at a Nordstrom sale actually.
ETA: Ankle boots are cute and I'd like a pair myself, but I find the tall boots more classic and would rather pay $$$ for tall boots.

I'm on the hunt for some calf/knee high cognac colored boots so following to see what all you ladies are suggesting/rocking!

I would do a two toned riding boot, with no hardware, in a flattish heel, black on the base and main part of the shaft and then cognac around the top. I have a pair like this and I wear them a ton.

Yep tall brown/caramel boots!
ETA: these are the ones I have Sam Edelman Women's Penny Riding Boot, Whiskey, 8 M US https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007FNCO3Q/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_CrA6vbFG7ARMQ

Frye's last forever.
I like tall boots. Brown or black depending on your wardrobe. I'm wearing my brown ones now lately.

I would probably wear a tall boot more often. Color wise I would look for something in a grayish brown color. I have some like this and it goes with all colors well.

@looch: @Mamasig: Would you mind sharing a pic or name/brand of your shoe? Thanks!

@runnerd: I like these a lot! Pretty much spot on with what I'm looking for. How do you feel the sizing runs in the feet and calf?

@Alivoo01: http://www.naturalizer.com/Mobile/ProductDetail.aspx?p=EC0211337
They are kind of like this. It's naturalizer brand but I don't remember the exact style. I'm at work so I can't check. The color says grey but it does have a brownish tint so I wear it with everything.

I only had one pair of boots last winter and it was the tall Teva De la Vina boot. I bought it in Bison and recently ordered another pair in black. Super comfortable and supportive, they are waterproof and held up great to southeast Ohio winters.

I was leaning toward tall brown boots, and you ladies are confirming that for the most part!
I live in Maine so my real winter boots have to be effing serious. Probably from LL Bean.
@lamariniere: That site is bananas. How are they so cheap??
pear / 1593 posts
@Alivoo01: I bought a 7.5 regular, and had to return them for a 8 wide calf - granted I run, so I have bigger calfs, and am a little chubby! I couldn't zip the regular calf, and I never have had to buy wide before.
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
@runnerd: I normally wear an 8 and have big calves and somewhat wide feet! But Amazon on has 8B(M). Boo!

@Alivoo01: yea I ended up ordering mine directly from the brand website because I loved them so much but Amazon didn't have the size I needed after I returned them.

Tall black flat boots. I found my unicorn boots I had been hunting for at a little shop on Haight in SF. I can look up my receipt if you want the info. They are awesome. My mom got a pair too. I was looking for over 2 years since my last pair died.

I love my Joan of Arc Sorels!!! They go with everything and are SO comfy!

I bought these Sam Edelman boots last year and I loooove them. I recommend them to anyone looking for boots. I have the whiskey color, and my friend has the black. Both are really nice. And they are relatively inexpensive for the quality (compared to other boots anyway )

@lamariniere: Thanks for the 6pm link, they have some great prices! I'm now considering these http://www.6pm.com/frye-lindsay-plate-black-smooth-full-grain

@MrsSCB: those are beautiful! Can't go wrong with a classic style like that!

I would go for a classic tall brown boot, especially if a tall boot is suitable to your area/weather and you can make good use of them for the season. Then, add to your collection as your budget allows

I have knee high brown ones that I wear to death and with nearly every outfit in the fall/winter/spring
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
@MrsSCB: I have the same pair and going to buy in black this season!

@knittylady: the se ones were comfy from the beginning! Didn't want to break fryes in!

It really depends on your style. I would get a pair you LOVE. I have Frye moto boots and Frye combat boots and only have both because I needed a slip on boot for pregnancy. I wear them with dresses, all kinds of pant styles, everything. I think mid or short boots are more versatile. I often wear black thigh highs or knee socks with black dresses and black tights to create the look of high boots, it just depends on your style.
My legs are so long that tall boots are mid on me .

I went with simple, knee-high riding boots in cognac - Frye Melissa - and have been really glad I did. They go with everything and are comfy and well-made
