we had a hand-me-down bumbo, but his thighs were too chunky so wouldn't fit in it. at 4 months, i would put him in the rock 'n play and have it next to me while i ate, or have him hangout in the swing. he was great about being on his belly too so i often just put him on the playmat.

We used the boppy pillow a lot for that, i'd kind of position it around his bum and it worked.

We didn't have a bouncy seat, but we had a bumbo, which we barely used, lol.

I don't understand, why avoid it if it could be useful to you? So long as you don't overuse or do anything crazy, if it makes your life easier.....?

Sorry if that's snappy, I just don't get it! I think having one was great, my LO used it and was sitting up on her own "sooner" than normal, and was never held back physically because of that seat! Great for bathroom breaks, getting lunch for yourself, etc! fwiw we had the Mama's & Papa's version.

ETA, what about a jolly jumper while you eat?

@Beebug: We have the Mamas and Papas snug, and I still use it every day at 17 months as his food chair at work (he comes with me). That thing was worth it's weight in gold!

@emg86: I have heard the bumbos aren't so bad if you put a blanket folded up under their bums. Basically if you look at the shape of the seat, the legs are higher then the seat/bottom part but a blanket can help wtih that.

I would think about investing in a high chair!

@emg86: I've heard the same and similar things regarding excesausers and jumperoos. My boys just three months but ideally I'd like to avoid these if possible.

We used an exersaucer for maybe 10 min. a day.

I figure too much of any positioner is bad, but we borrowed a bumbo from a friend and use it only during meal times. It's cheaper than the stupid 60.00 infant insert for our high chair, which basically does the same thing.. It is a huge help, and includes her in meal times which I really like.

I'm maybe a little more relaxed about this kind of thing, but my perspective is that too much of anything is bad, and a little of something is probably fine. I'm not plopping her in it for hours, and she gets a ton of floor time, so.... Meh. It makes my daily life a lot more enjoyable.

ANY baby holder can cause problems if your LO is in it too much. Heck, car seats are the No. 1 offender, but I'm guessing you have one

I would get one super cheap on CL and use it sparingly if you think it will be useful. My LO survived the car seat, the RNP, Bumbos, jumperoos, bouncers, high chairs ... you name it. All had a time and place.

I would often just sit behind Xander with my legs around him for stability and then just eat my food behind him, haha. He's be supported if he fell in any direction except forward, and then I'd be all "Guess you're doing tummy time!" until he wailed, and then I'd prop him back up again, haha.

oh and as for what I do... I prop her with pillows (she's 16 weeks) and then let her flop over. I figure it's good for balance. We also have a jumperoo so I'll put her in that (with a throw pillow on the floor under it since she's otherwise too short to touch).

We use our high chair! It reclined so she wouldn't flop forward. She loves sitting in it and watching me do stuff.
