Yeah, just a simple response of "awww". I could not tell them. My good friends DH wanted to name there son this really weird name. He was totally wanting it and I can tell she was not as much and came to me and asked. ONLY because I knew she was hesitant and with the look on her face was able to tell her "ummm...not so fond of that one...ummm yeah" LOL

I always say, "Oh, that's so nice!". Even if I hate it. It's one of those white lies that I find to be perfectly acceptable. I mean, what is the purpose of saying you don't like it, ya know? Like you said, it's not our child so it's best not to opine.

I would never in a million years tell someone I dislike the name they picked, whether the baby was already born or not. I just think that's insensitive. Also, no matter what name they pick, I find that you get used to it and it just fits. We have friends who named their baby an unusual name in August and at first I was sort of like "hmmm" but now I love it and can't imagine him as anything else!

Honestly, I don't mention the name to the parents. I'll go home and talk to my husband about it. Maybe we make comments like "where did THAT come from? or "At least he has a normal middle name." I'm a horrible person...but at least I can admit it!!

It depends on who it is.

If it was my sister or one of my best friends and the baby WASN'T born yet, yes I would say something.

One of my close friends' name starts with an S, her husband's name starts with an S, and her first son's name starts with an S. When she was pregnant with her second son they were considering naming him Elijah. There is nothing wrong with Elijah, but a few of us mentioned Spencer (her older son) would probably tease the hell out of him since he would be the ONLY one in the family who's name doesn't start with an S. Even their dog's name starts with an S. He ended up being named Sydney, lol.

If its just a friend or an acquaintance, I wouldn't dream of saying anything.

If I like it, I say whatever I'm thinking. Like "Oh, that was a character in this book I loved as a kid, and it's a great name!"
If I don't like it, I think my stock answer is "Neat!"
(I suck at lying, so that's as good as I can do)
I'd never be like "Wow, that's crazypants. Way to be a sucky parent from the get-go."
The exception would be if there is dissent re: a potential name and I like one parent better than the other. I.e., if my sister were preggo and her husband wanted to name their son "Ladykiller", and my sister was not on board, I'd be like "That is a dumb name, clearly you should defer to my sister on this."

I was just talking about this with my sister last night! We are not sharing our DD's name until after she is born because we love the name and don't want to hear other's opinions.

In my opinion, keep it to yourself, or tell someone else. I don't want to hear, or really care, that you don't like my child's name. But it would hurt my feelings if you told me so. My sister said she is going to tell me if she doesn't like DD's name, and that made me mad!

You don't say mean things to people about their babies. They love them and obviously loved the name, so keep your mouth shut! If you don't want to lie, then skirt around it, like "that is such a unique name!" Then you aren't saying you love it when you don't.

Sister-in-law was considering Paisley as a girl's name. I pointed out that my dad knows a male Paisley who he brings up as often as possible, and that she needs to like the pattern if she'll use the name. I also pointed out that our Scottish side of the family came from the Paisley area in Scotland, so it'd be really cool from that angle.

When another person said she wanted to name her son Torin, I had to point out the giant cow people in World of Warcraft (which most of her friends played) were called Taurens. She said she didn't care. After which, yay Torin! Though... I confess that I still had to say "For the Horde!" sometimes after saying his name (there were a lot of "For the Horde!" shouts at the baby shower, too.)

I didn't comment on another friend's daughter's name, Arden. It's a pretty name, but I figured (rightly) that a lot of people would call her Arwen. BUT it's not something that'll get her teased, so I didn't comment.

If the baby's born... I pay more attention to the baby than the name.

Maybe I'd be a better person if I just said "that's nice." But if it's something that the parent will be hearing about for years to come, I comment once, then drop it.

If I don't like the name, I ask what the significance of it is and after hearing the story behind it, I end up understanding why they chose it.

I know baby names are a personal choice so, no, I don't tell them I don't like it. I understand how hard it is to pick out a name that both parents can agree on so I don't think my opinion matters. If they need help picking between names, yeah, I'll offer my thoughts.

I definitely wouldn't say anything either. But like others have mentioned I would go home and talk about it with my husband.

I definitely would pretend to like it and ask about the significance of the name. I've been hurt by these responses to our LO's name:

"Oh, you're really gonna name her that?"

"Um..,interesting."

"well, you still have time to decide"

This happened to me recently. My oldtime friend announced the name of her son, it's a hyphenated name, the names alone aren't too uncommon but together they sound like a rap star (there's nothing wrong with that but her family isn't really rap star material)!

I actually really like his first name but for a girl - in fact, I was considering it (as a girl's name).

I didn't comment about her combo choice - it's just not my business, but I did inquire about her first name choice. I didn't want to say that it's now a popular girl's name, but I did mention that it's popular. She said she picked the name because it was very uncommon but didn't seem to mind otherwise.

That's all I intend to say, I've said my peace =)

Absolutely not! I always either say "Oh, how adorable!" or "Well, hello ___!"

no, but i'm in the camp of, i'd probably talk about it with my husband.
