My husband took a job in an area we never even considered, col and the job opportunity made it a hard offer to refuse so we said we'd do it for 2 years. It turns out we love, love, love it here so we're staying. We've been here 9 years and have bought our forever home.

My now husband and I moved from the midwest (we met at college in a large college town in between our two hometowns) to the west coast for graduate school. I had always planned on moving after we both graduated but he ended up finding a job at a great company. 5 years or so later, we both work for that same great company. They really supported us when we went through a really rough time and it would take an incredible opportunity for us to move any from our jobs here (or them opening a second location).
I don't really believe in the concept of forever homes. I know that we'll "trade-up" in a few years, most likely in the same area we are in now, however, I'd always be willing to move if the right situation presented itself.

We've moved a lot for DH's medical training. For med school/residency, we made choices based on best fit of program, not really location at all (that is, we picked locations we wanted to live, but not necessarily close to any family). For fellowship especially (only 1 year), we picked a place that would be somewhere "different" to live, since it had a very short, defined start and end date. After that, we just looked based on his job prospects primarily. Once we knew where his opportunities were, we then weighed other factors (eventual job prospects for me, other things we like/like to do, etc) to pick our choice. None were particularly close to family at that point, so it didn't really factor in...other than being close to a big airport!

We actually do live close to family but we don't live here for that reason. It just happened that we both got into grad school in this city, and then afterwards, we got job offers here and one other city and we preferred the job offers here. If we had preferred the job offers in the other city, we would likely have moved there. There aren't too many cities where we can both get jobs in our (different) fields and we are just lucky that our families happen to live close to one of them.

I'm in my forever home in theory. Occasionally dream of moving but probably won't. We decided to live in close proximity of our work. We are in our forever careers.

We moved 3 hours away from family (we met in high school so our families live in the same town) for DHs job straight out of university. We love love love our new small town life and DH has an incredible job. I really wish family would move here, lol. I can't see us moving unless DH got an even better job offer where our parents live... But even then we would love a bit far away because they live in a busy city and we don't love that any more.

ETA we live in our probably forever home. Definitely will be here for a while unless something on the water came up for a really good price or something but that doesn't happen so I think this is where we shall stay!
