Have they ever surprised you with a visit?
My mom mentioned that she wants to do this soon...she lives about 7 hours away. Um, no thanks! She surprised me with a few visits when I was in college...it wasn't fun to have my mom show up at a house party that I threw with my roommates!

They haven't. I flew home and surprised my mom in December. A couple days later I went to my dad's and surprised my siblings. My brother just said "oh hey leialou" all casually, but my sister screamed and cried. It was so worth the secret.

God no. They don't even make planned visits. I've lived in Boston for five years and my dad has never visited, my mom visited like three times. My sisters make planned visits.

Surprise visits are the WORST. I don't understand when that is a good idea - ever.
My parents live 2 hours away and wouldn't think of driving 2 hours only to find out we had gone out for the day or made other plans.

@Reese: I still remember one spring break...my parents were about 30 minutes away from my college apartment and they called and told me to get ready for dinner. Um, I was in another state!

No, thank goodness! I've probably made it pretty clear in the past that this would not be appreciated! My Aunt & Cousin surprised my parents a few years ago as it was my Mum's birthday... my Dad was not impressed!

omg don't joke about this!!!! DH and I were wondering if my parents are the type to just show up on our doorstep after the baby comes without giving us a real heads up! Or asking if it's an ok time to come visit!

I do live near my family and this is why I live a safe distance from my family, they have to drive to me and can't walk. My brother just moved into their neighborhood...... I'm wondering how many surprise visits they'll be getting!

Nooo thank god. My mom and IL's live about 2 hours away (in different directions) but have never surprised us (my mom NEVER comes to visit, actually). My dad lives about 4 hours away so he always calls first.

Nooooo!!! No surprise visits!! My parents (and his) have always planned their visits (well, other than the time they threw me a surprise party but they didn't stay at the house so it was okay).

My mom is the best and I would be excited about any visit but... a little notice would be great! LOL! My crazy MIL would probably do it though.
My mom and both my sisters and myself all live in different states. We managed to surprise my sister in Utah- my mom planned to visit her and me and my other sister surprised her (me one day, sister the next!) So that was fun- she expected a guest, but got more than she thought! (We got a hotel)

I hate surprise visits. If a family member ever showed up unannounced, I may or may not be showering/bathing LO so I won't be able to hear the doorbell.

@blackbird: I think my mom is serious. She says her friends will think she is a bad person if she doesn't see the baby right away. This is my same mom who had a cruise planned around my due date a few weeks ago!
