DH sent both me and his mother flowers for mothers day. The flowers did not arrive in the best shape but I called DH and told them I love them and didn't mention anything. DHs mother calls and starts complaining about the quality of the flowers. So, after he tgets off the phone he asks me and I said that some of them were a little damaged but I still love them. I personally, would not have said anything because I think it's rude to complain about a gift. What are your thoughts??
If you got flowers delivered as a gift and they were in poor condition, would you say something?

not to the gifter! that comes across as unappreciative. if she's upset about it she should have called the florist.

I always call to complain to the florist, but not to the gifter. I figure it wasn't their intention to send dead flowers.

I agree with @mrs. bird: she should have contacted the florist they came from.
I've had this same exact situation happen with my MIL. It did irk me a bit but it got us a store credit and the knowledge to never ever use Proflowers ever again!

Last year, my husband sent me flowers at work for my Bday, and although he'd ordered an arrangement and paid extra for a pretty vase and birthday balloon, it all arrived at work in a box....and I had to assemble it myself.
I didn't tell him and just said Thank You. But later, he started asking more and more questions, like did the front office lady say anything, blah blah. And I was like, well....they just came in a box, so no one could tell they were flowers until I got back to my desk and assembled them myself.
And then he gor really angry and called the company and got like, half off or something.

I agree with the previous ladies! It's not his fault the deliverer damaged them or florist chose poor quality flowers! I would probably let DH know but only to forewarn him about his moms possibly getting messed up! lol

@mrs. wagon: I had a problem with proflowers too! I have a store credit, but I won't ever use it because I don't trust them to send the flowers I order.

I just think it's so unappreciative to say something. Because now DH is like "great, i sent crappy flowers."

@oliviaoblivia: @littlek: yep. We used the credit on a non holiday and we have never ever ordered from them again. So not worth it. We now always order from local florists by calling them directly!

I was just shocked that she called as soon as she got them and started complaining about them. It would be another thing, if after the moment had passed, casually mentioning they may not have been perfect.

@littlek: Umm your DH did not send crappy flowers! You should tell him he needs to stop believing that lie & just take it as a lesson learned to not order them from there again... and maybe not send his mom a gift that he can't examine himself before giving it to her. I feel bad for your DH now. =(

Depends who sent them. DH buys me flowers often enough that he wants to know if his money is well spent. I don't think it's complaining when I tell him if the quality is poor. It's definitely not the first thing I mention. He's going to see the flowers when he gets home anyway.

Agreed, not to the gifter. I would have called the company and complained to them though. Especially if the gifter is going to see them later and be as irked as you are.

DH sent me flowers from Proflowers for Valentine's day this year and they came completely unopened and looked like a vase of greenery. I was just happy to get flowers at work and knew they would open, but he was so upset they weren't what he ordered. He complained and got a full refund. I never would have complained to him, but I'm glad he got his money back. He spent way too much for what we received.

Meanwhile, I had a TERRIBLE experience with Teleflora recently. I ordered my aunt the first picture arrangement for her 50th birthday. It was over $100!!! And this is what they delivered (the second picture)... WTF?! My aunt said the flowers arrived half dead and/or semi-broken. The local floral shop is literally down the street from her.
AND they promised to resend a different arrrangement the next day and they didn't. Then when I called to complain again, they just picked up the bouquet from my aunt and called it a day. WTF again?! Never using them or that local floral shop ever again!!

@Alivoo01: omg that's awful. I don't see a single rose in there. I understand that sometimes they have to substitute flower types based on availability in the local shop, but it looks like they substituted roses with daisies, both regular and gerbera... the final product definitely is not $100 worth of flowers. Unacceptable!!

@littlek: this is not about the subject, but your photo-- our LOs have identical hats! My mom made his from a pattern she got online, wonder if it was the same one? So cute!
And yea, I would complain to the florist not the giver. But if the giver was my husband I'd probably have to complain to him because he'd be the one to get it fixed. He'd probably notice that the flowers were bad and comment on it himself first!

I wouldn't say anything at the time, but the next time my DH went to order flowers I would casually suggest that he use a different florist than last time. We had a horrific experience with 1-800 flowers years ago and will never again order from them or any of their competitors. We always look up local florists and call them directly now!
Basically they never even delivered the flowers he ordered, then when he called to complain and get his money back they ignored him and sent a totally different and cheaper boquet to me a week late. He spent hours on the phone screaming at people until they finally agreed to refund him. They tried everything not to give him his money back though. Oh and because of this we also don't do flowers for V-day anymore unless they're bought on the way home from work from our local shop. We've found that if you try to place an order on these hallmark holidays it's just a nightmare.

@Modern Daisy: Similar thing happened to my BIL. Bought two dozen roses for his wife for Valentine's Day, they were never delivered. He called and complained, so they sent two dozen lilies over, and they were half dead. BIL was Livid. Capital L intended, lol.
I would definitely complain to the florist but not to my DH. It's not like he went to the store and picked a half-dead bouquet.

I even showed my boss the picture of what was delivered and he said they looked like funeral flowers! Sigh. When I called about getting a refund, they only wanted to refund HALF of what I paid!!!!

@littlek: I snapped the pic with a thank you attached too. That way I'm not complaining, but he knows he overpaid for what was sent and can deal with it however he chooses. I totally appreciate the gesture of DH sending flowers, but I don't want him to overpay. This is what I got vs. what was expected. All the tulips opened and died before any of the lillies opened.

Um, my husband would want to see the flowers and he call the florist and complain!
I wouldn't have to say anything probably because he would see them. He would be pissed. Maybe is be sneaky and send him a picture text of me holding the vase and be like "thank you baby!" And he would get the jist? I'd feel bad saying anything but I feel like my husband shouldn't pay $100 for some shitty flowers! That's not fair. -

It would depend on who gave them to me, but if it were someone close to me like my husband (or my son if I were older, haha) I would probably say something just to make sure they got their moneys worth. I think it all depends on the tone, though. I wouldn't "complain" about it, I would more just be notifying if that makes sense. I wouldn't want to not say anything and then have the person who sent them order from the same place again and again thinking they were great. So basically, to me, whether or not it was rude of your MIL depends on how she said it.

It depends. I know my mom sent my aunt flowers, and they were dead, and she did tell my mom so she would know to not use that florist again. I think if they were in really bad shape, I would tell my DH, but in a sweet way.
Personally I never use Proflowers, 1-800 Flowers, any "flowers in a box." I always Yelp/Google reviews of local florists and order an arrangement over the phone. I wish DH would do the same but I think the ease of ordering online appeals to men!
