What would you pay them/give them as a thank you?
My best friend will be checking on our cats for us in November when we go on a trip. She will just come over every other day or so and check on our two cats. I was thinking of giving her enough cash to cover her gas and maybe a bottle of wine or something. I'm not sure if that's enough or not though...what would you do?

My friends and I often do stuff like this for each other. We never give or receive cash because it just seems weird. Normally just some booze or baked goods or something as a token thank you

If it was my best friend, I would get them a funny card, write a sincere thank you, and give them some wine/alcohol of their alcohol.
A casual friend pet sat for us and we just paid her what we'd pay any regular pet sitter (and rounded up a bit).

I have to do this often as well. We never give cash or anything. Maybe will take her out to dinner or something like that later.

We took care of a friend's cat a few times and he didn't pay us anything. I think he and his girlfriend paid for a dinner out, though (it's hard to remember!) I didn't really expect anything and I probably would have declined if he offered. I'm sure he would have taken care of our cats in exchange, but we have a pet sitter we really like so we just go with her.

My friend and an I swap house checking and they have looked in on our cat before. We don't give each other anything, it's just part of what we would do for each other.
I guess if it's out of their way gas could make sense and then just making dinner or something or treating when you're out if you want to. Also depends on the length of time. Ours is usually just a week or week and a half.

We just trade off actually. They watch our dog and check on our cats, and we check on their cats (they board their dog). Sometimes we bring them a souvineir.

I think wine or some chocolate/candy would be a nice thank you. I don't think money is necessary since she's your best friend. I'm sure she would decline it anyway.

We just dog sat for a friend for a long weekend. We did it cause it's fun for us to have a dog for a few days. She gave us a cute card and booze gift card but that was unexpected and very sweet.

I have pet sat for friends before and I would feel uncomfortable if they gave me cash. I do really appreciate a bottle of wine or other thoughtful gift though!

Is it possible for you to return the favor? When my grandmother passed away and we were stuck, friends of ours took our dog for a few days. We had them over for dinner the next month then a few months later we took their dog for a couple nights. It's worked out nicely because the dogs get along with no trouble.

For a friend, I like to do a food or booze gift that is local to where I traveled -generally something like wine, beer, chocolate, beef jerky, etc.
Cash would be weird to any of my close friends.

@MOMTOLITTLEB: no, she has dogs and I would have to stay at her place to watch them and with kids that's just not doable. They don't do well with cats so they couldn't come here either.

I think wine sounds perfect. Usually my friends will stay at my house to watch my dog, so I will make sure to stick the fridge with good food and booze as a thank you.

I pet sit for a friend, it's not as involved, but I usually also get the mail on my way in. I would not be comfortable accepting cash, but I do accept gifts of food.

I would also maybe factor her time in a bit if she has a long drive to get to your place. Maybe like $5-$10 per visit?

@T.H.O.U.: it's probably about 15 minutes from her house. Completely out of the way for her though, she doesn't come up this way for anything else like work/family.

@Bao: none of my friends would accept money in a situation like that so I would just buy them something I know they want in the $25 price range

I've pet-sat for friends (way before kids) and have been thanked with souvenirs from where they went (don't remember specifics now but it was cute/thoughtful), starbucks card, nice box of cupcakes/macarons, etc. No cash.

I think your idea sounds fine. We swap off pet-sitting with a friend and just bring back a souvenir every time. It pretty much balances out.
