A friend gave me a few preemie things when my daughter was born early term at 5.5 lbs. I thought it was such a thoughtful gift. When my second child was measuring to be a similar weight, even at closer to full term, I bought a few preemie things myself in my third trimester.
Eta: I gave the same friend some premie clothes when she was pregnant with twins who were expected to be quite early because I remembered how much I appreciated having things that my daughters weren't swinming in. I felt like too-big clothes made my healthy but tiny babies look sick, and that made me sad. I have them before her babies were born.

I didn't have a preemie, just a small baby. Since I already knew I had IUGR and spent all of third tri expecting to go into labor early, I got a set at Carters ahead of time and didn't wash it. But when he was born NB size was way too big and we had to send someone out to get preemie clothes and diapers.
@PinkElephant: I have a picture of him wearing NB when it clearly didn't fit him and know what you mean about looking sick.

I was induced unexpectedly at 35 weeks, so I didn't know in advance that I would need preemie clothes. He was 4 lbs 3 oz when we brought him home. I bought preemie clothes while he was in the NICU for 2 weeks, and I think he wore them for about 4 weeks after he was released.
I think I only got about 6 - 7 preemie sleeper suits, a pack of onesies, a pack of kimono tops, and 2 - 3 preemie pants. Afterwards, I donated them to the NICU, and only kept his coming home outfit. They look so tiny, it's hard to remember he was so small!

I was gifted an outfit set, never bought any. He didn't come home until he was well into newborn size, anyway.

A friend went to all the consignment stores in the area and rounded up a bunch while we were in the hospital. He was a 5 pounder so we were able to get by with those and the newborn carters stuff we had.
This time I bought a cute coming home outfit in preemie size, just in case. I left the tags on in case she is too big, but my emotional self was so so sad that my son had to wear some random sleeper that I didn't like and didn't really fit him. Totally lame thing to get worked up about, but it did make me sad

Well, our preemie was unexpected, so we never prepared with preemie clothing. My MIL went out the day he was born and bought a bunch of little preemie outfits.

I sent my sister to Carter's once we got home. LO was born at 35 weeks and was in the hospital for a week. He outgrew them quickly, but it was nice to have something that fit. He ended up coming home in a newborn outfit that was huge on him.

My preemie was also unexpected, so we bought clothes when we found out he was coming home from the NICU.

We were team green and knew he'd be early so we bought one outfit for each sex. We bought a few things after he was born but the NICU also provided some clothes while we were there. He was in them for a month or 2 before we moved to NB size!

Our preemie was way early and didn't wear clothes for a few months so we had plenty of time to prepare. I purchased some myself and we were given some as well. The thing is preemies aren't in preemie clothes for all that long because they can't wear clothes until they can hit a certain weight/maintain temp and outgrow P by 5ish lbs. She was in NB before she left the hospital and we had a lot of people give us P clothes after she had grown out of them. I donated lots to the NICU.
