@Silva: made me laugh! my DH is also a pediatric resident (well as of the beginning of july) and I am a social worker too! Like attracts like I guess...
I think I would do peds or ob/gyn...

Obgyn. It used to be my dream to be a doctor. And I thought it would he a happier choice to bring life into the world than to be around sick people

Maybe anesthesiology or dermatology like many of the other ladies! Or maybe OBGYN. I would get to deliver babies all the time, right?!

I wanted to be a plastic surgeon when I was younger. Unfortunately, my brain doesn't do math or science very well, so there was no way I could take premed classes and pass.

I look at my OB's lifestyle and think no way! Half the time he goes home at 5 after dealing with hormonal pregnant women all day and the other half he's on call at the hospital all day and night! And he actually takes the time to call patients when he's out with his 4 kids, so...that's not a life I'd ever want, babies or no babies.

Either a midwife or a baby surgeon (pediatric surgeon? specializing in babies?) not sure what to call it. But yes, I'm interested in learning about becoming a doula someday. I was never interested in science or anything medical related until the end or after college, so I have ZERO experience in any of that!!

@yellowbird: Do you work with kids right now? I have major respect for pediatric dentists!

@MamaMoose: oooh yes! Neonatology would be amazing.
@Circusbee: that's neonatology
pomegranate / 3577 posts
@Mrs. Pen: Neonatologists don't operate. They're pediatricians with extra training. Pediatric surgeons are general surgeons with extra training. (Surgeons who operate on babies are never pediatricians unless they switched careers.)

Definitely Pulmonology. Helping patients (and my DH) breathe. Maybe look into the pediatric side of it.

@spaniellove: DH and I were talking about my ob one day and it dawned on us he probably can't hardly ever drink because they are on call at all hours of day and night!

Surgery of some kind. When I wanted to be a doctor back in the day, I used to love watching operations.

@Espion: ooh ok. A lot of what I learned from specialties is from grey's anatomy... Totally factual, right!?
coconut / 8430 posts
@Mrs. Pen: Omg me too. Haha! Being a doctor is exactly like it is on Grey's right?

Is there a type of doctor that doesn't have to touch people or interact with anyone? That's what I'd want to be.

Urology or emergency medicine.
I'm surprised at all the derm choices. The thought of dealing with all the gross skin issues

neurosurgery!
i always wanted to be a brain surgeon growing up. turns out, i don't like sciences!
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@mrsjyw: I find neurosurgery fascinating, but I definitely don't have steady enough hands for that!
@sunny: I do believe it must be just like it is on TV... I mean, media can't lie!
pomegranate / 3577 posts
@Mrs. Pen: lol! People used to ask what I do based on Greys. I wish I had watched beyond the 1st season!

I think I'd want to be a GP or physicians assistant or something along those lines. Maybe family medicine?
coconut / 8430 posts
@night cheese: I have an md friend who does research in a lab. I don't think she has to touch anyone! Haha!

A psychologist, specializing in treating PPD and PTSD. I've given some thought to going back to school several times over the past year, but with a kid and family to help support (and a well paying, stable career I really enjoy) I'm sure I'll never pull the trigger and do it.
I'm surprised by all the derm choices too! Skin be nasty, yo!
honeydew / 7303 posts
@autumnlove: yes!! We see 80% kids in my practice. We even take them over to the OR to be sedated if they're too little to cooperate or just have super high anxiety. I love working with kids!
nectarine / 2466 posts
@lawbee11: that was going to be exactly my answer haha. "Can you please read the line on the very bottom of the page." Great hours, not really on call. Not much stress.. that's my kind of Dr job!
persimmon / 1316 posts
Hmmm... being a nurse I would have to say I would never want to be a doctor. But if I were, I would say Anesthesiologist.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
I too know what I would choose, but if I had a do-over, I'd seriously consider serm or another lifestyle residency... Though I'm pretty sure I'd still end up in the same specialty that I'm in now.

I think I'd be a GP/family doctor. Two of my grandparents were GPs and it sounded so interesting!
