I go by what I pay. But our gag gifts are like....crappy gag gifts

i go by what i paid. unless i dislike the person then I go by the what the retail price is LOL

I usually go by what I paid, unless they only asked for one specific thing and it was on sale. In that case, I get myself a coffee for braving the mall at Christmastime.

Retail price and I find something cheaper then my budget, score!

What I paid. It's a win-win: they receive something awesome, and I gift an awesome bargain!

We don't really have any gift exchanges with limits besides our own budget, but I have to say that for my family I squeeze every penny out of the amount I intend to spend. For DH's family... if I get something that's originally a higher retail price for less, I usually call it a day. BUT, they send us lists with all items that are like $150+ retail or ask for cash, and then his sister gave us Avon samples for me and a previously viewed DVD for DH last year, so I sometimes don't feel particularly generous with them.

I go by sort of a mix of the two? If it's something that is really awesome, I don't care if I didn't meet the budget max. If it's something that was way overpriced to begin with, so I feel like it's only WORTH what I paid, I'll add a little more. And it depends on the recipient. For family I try to get them as much as I can while staying in the budget.
