Do you have a gate, netting or a motion detector for it? I think I would only feel comfortable with a gate with a lock but I want to know what other options people use!

We will have a pool in about a week. We are installing a self latching, locking gate, there is a video camera monitor and we're putting an alarm system on the gate and bracelets on the girls. Paranoid much?! Yes I am!

There's also these swimsuits where the neck collar is like a floating device to prevent tipping over. It also sounds an alarm should it submerge in water.

Currently we just have a 3 foot fence around our pool. Next summer, when LO can walk, we plan to add self closing/locking gates and one of those sensors that floats in the pool and sounds an alarm if anyone goes in. Plus, no kids in the pools area without floaties!!!

My parents had a pool with a large gate and it was padlocked. They took it down when we were much older

@autumnlove: let me know what you decide on and how you like it. This paranoid mama wants as many layers of protection as possible!

@Mrs. Jacks: I don't think you CAN be too paranoid when it comes to water safety.
My nanny family has a pool and it's so stupid how their house is set up because the lower level sliding glass door opens onto the patio where the pool is. So there is no lock system at all. They are installing an alarm so if that door opens they know immediately. There will be alarms on all the lower level windows too as they all lead out to the pool area.

@Mrs. Jacks: No house yet but most of the homes we are looking at have pools without gates!

I would think a nanny should have all those alarms AND a giant gate, too! Pools make me nervous. I want one SO BAD, but we won't get a house with one until the kids are older. They aren't as common here

@Coco Bee: I would have nightmares about that! Our family had a similar set up growing up and my parents fenced around the back door.

@Mrs. Jacks: I know it's awful. It's so easy to unlock that door even the 18 mos old knows how.

We have a pool that sits basically in the middle of our yard. We have a fence with a gate that we actually moved to the other side of our pool to block it off from our drive-thru garage. Right now we don't have any kids, and we sometimes leave our garage doors open if we're working outside. The last thing I wanted was for someone's kid to come wandering into our backyard and be able to get into/fall into our pool. So, we moved it.
If/when we have a baby, we will need to put up another fence on the other side so that our child can not walk out of our back door and into the pool. But for now, the way we have it makes me feel the most safe.
Ha, sorry for the long winded answer!

@autumnlove: I think you can install one pretty cheaply. In fact, I wish that there wasn't one at our new house because we would have made one that was equipped with all the features we are looking for, rather than having to retrofit one.

We have a fence around the perimiter of our pool now so no outside kids anca fall in- but we have a deck that walks right out to the pool. We will be installing a locking gate and fence on the deck so it the LO gets out to the deck he/she cant fall in the pool. We will also be putting an alarm on the sliding door that goes out to the deck. The one good thing about the fact that we havent replaced that sliding door yet- its so hard to open i dont think a LO will be able to pull it! My 7 year old nephew can barely open it!!

My in-laws have a pool that isn't very secure. They have two doors in the house that open onto the deck, and one door from the garage. The two gates on the fence around the other side of the deck also don't have locks. Their kids were older when they installed it, and it was the early/mid 90s, and I don't think there was as much of an emphasis on safety. I am going to be super paranoid though and am going to encourage them to get a surface alarm, and I like the idea of those bracelets. I will also be taking my kids to swimming lessons from a very young age.
