I keep thinking this will happen but then it doesn’t. They certainly CAN share clothes but for the best fit they are one size apart. For reference they are 5 and 6.5.

Mine are 2 and 4, so they aren't that close in age---but my oldest is just built so much slimmer. She's not particularly tiny, but she's just very "slim". My youngest is short and stocky and just bigger boned. So my oldest is wearing 4's and 5s, and my youngest is wearing 3s and 4. Width wise, they are about the same, but they are 7 inches difference in height.

I actually got swimsuits and switched the girls' swim bottoms because the size 4 was way too big for DD1 and the size 3 was kind of tight on DD2 with a swim diaper.

I have twins so it's different, but it hasn't seemed to be a problem to have that many clothes in the same size. In all honesty, it makes it easier because they can share clothes, so we probably have 1.5 times the clothes of one kid even though my children are different sexes- they share pants a lot.

Our boys are 20 months apart (2 and 3.5) and its definitely getting harder to tell the clothes apart. DS1 is super tall and thin, so we end up having to size up his shirts quite a bit (long torso problems). DS2 is a little stockier so he can wear 2T shirts just fine, although he still needs 24 month pants (ugh I hate that awkward size phase).

I think it would be easier to have the boys wear the same clothes because then I wouldn't have to keep track of tiny shorts and socks and what not. They are starting to fight over things, so I'd probably just buy doubles of everything and be done with it.

One thing I've noticed anyway is that as my boys get older, they thrash their clothes harder and nothing lasts as long. So the ability to pass down clothes isn't as much of an issue as time goes on (unless I wanted DS2 to always wear dingy stained or ripped clothes, which I don't). I'm having to buy more new clothes for DS2 as time goes on, so I'm just trying to do my best to buy the clothes as cheaply as possible and then hopefully we'll reach a point where they can share clothes soon!

If they were the same gender and could share the same size, I think that would be so convenient. I'd just have one big dresser and closet and they'd have to share it all. One change of clothes in the car, "diaper" bag, day care, etc

ETA: I guess you're bummed your have to buy more clothes and couldn't pass clothes down between DS1 to DS2? I could see that. Maybe ok at it as a chance to downsize how many clothes they rotate through?

Maybe I am biased though, because between hand-me-downs and family gifts, we have WAY too many clothes and I am always purging.

My kids are 20 months apart and g/b, so no clothes sharing, but this winter they were both in 18 month pants. My daughter is just really thin, so they were too short, but fit around the waist. She’s grown a lot though, so now she’s in bigger sizes.
