People always say that having one kid of each gender is the "perfect family".
But the fact is that if you have one boy and one girl, the boy won't ever have a brother and the girl won't ever have a sister. That's a wrinkle I hadn't thought of when we first decided to stop at two kids.
If you have one kid of each gender, would you be sad that your son wouldn't have a brother and your daughter wouldn't have a sister?

My parents got around this through foster care! My brother and I found out that we didn't want another sister, but we REALLY wanted a little brother.

I will be a little sad. I have a sister and SO has a brother, so we both got to have those relationships and we're both close with our siblings.
I know SO really wants a boy though, so it would make me happy to have a boy next. But since I already have a girl I'd also be stoked to give her a sister.

I don't worry about it too much since I am an only child. So if my daughter ends up with any sibling at all, I think that is just bonus points for her since I have never experienced sibling bonds.

I'm really not too worried about it for one main reason, I had two half brothers I didn't live with, and then ended up with a step borther and sister. My bond wasn't too close with any of them, and my husband's bond with his brother doesn't really exist, so we're not worried if Cameron is an only child or has a brother or a sister.

I have sisters and my DH has a brother so yes it will be sad if we went up getting one of each gender, however this is what we want. I have girl friends who are super close with their brother & it didn't seem to affect them at all. I would want my kids to be like this.

Yep! I'd love for baby #2 to be a girl so my LO can have a sister.. :T but will be happy either way as long as the baby is healthy!

I don't think I'd be sad - My LO is a girl and if we had another girl, then yay for sisters! But if we had a boy then that would be good, too. I have an older brother and it was fun. When I was younger, I wanted a little brother, not a sister!

I'd be ok with it, but since that's the family my husband grew up in and he hated not having a brother, he wants us to keep having kids until we have at least 2 girls and 2 boys.

I didn't have a sister and always wanted one. As an adult, I wish I had one even more. I love being my mom's only girl, though. So I think I would be a little sad, moreso for our girl than our boy. Still, I would be thrilled with "one of each"!

My younger brother and I were super close... and had friends to fill the void of no bro/ no sis... and didn't really feel any different being just us two Although I do remember teasing my mom about having a third when we were in middle school.

I loved having sisters and the bond in adulthood is absolutely unbreakable... but the fact is that it's simply not realistic for us to have a large family so that we can have both sisters and brothers!

i do get sad. i've always wanted a sister. i think it's great to have 2 of each. but i just don't think it's realistic to have 4 kids. maybe if i could get twins during 2 pregnancies haha. but after going through this one, i definitely don't want to go that route again.

i have to say that i am really glad my girls each have each other as sisters. my sister and i are 10 years apart but as close as most people are with their BFF's.
if #3 is a boy, i will be sad he probably won't get a brother, but he'll be the baby of the family so i'm betting he'd get a TON of love to make up for it. he'll also have cousin relationships with other boys in our family. my DH grew up with 3 sisters and no brother but is very close to his 1st cousin who's an only child. they are like brothers to each other.

I would be a little sad about that. We have a boy and baby #2 on the way. Part of me wants a girl (to experience raising a daughter and having the mother/daughter bond) but a few friends of mine have 2 boys and they have so much fun together. And they're so close and look after each other that I get a little sad thinking my son won't have a brother. Which is why my DH and I are equally happy if we have a boy or a girl. For me, selfishly, I'd love a girl. But for my son, I want him to have a brother.

I have two brothers, and I've always been sad that I never had a sister. I feel like I'm close with both of my brothers and we have great relationships, but at the same time, I can see that they have a different bond with each other than they have with me.
All that to say that I think I would be sad for my girl if she didn't have a sister or my boy if he didn't have a brother, but we don't plan on having a large family just for that sake.

Hmm... I never thought of it this way. Still, we would *love* to have one of each. I think I'd always be a little sad if I didn't have a daughter, and DH would definitely be sad if he never had a son. ...but I guess maybe the kids would be sad that they didn't have a same-gender sibling too. So someone is going to lose out no matter what in the end.

Since we found out we're having boy-girl twins, we've heard the 'perfect family' comment a ton! It's kind of different because they are twins, but I'm really glad we have one of each because it will allow them to have their own identity more than I think being same sex twins might. Because DH has 3 other siblings, I think our kids will have lots of cousins living nearby, so I'm sure they'll be able to have family bonds with kids of the same sex. So for us, I don't really see it as a loss.
