We don't use ours right now. But I assume once I have it decorated nicer (we moved into our house 9 months ago, same time DS arrived), we will use it when people come over for dinner parties or cocktail parties.

I'm curious about this too. We moved recently and the living and formal dining areas are empty!

Our living and dining rooms are furnished but I'm not sure we'll ever use them! I have to admit that our living room is the world's fanciest dog bathroom - we keep my dog's litter boxes in there.

If we end up with a house like this, our plan is to make the formal living room a library, since we would never use a formal space. The formal dining room might become a play room, depending on the layout/space of the house. We're pretty casual people, lol, so we really don't need formal spaces.

@spaniellove: that's what our office is right now. We keep our 2 dogs in the office, which is right off our family room.
We still need to furnish our dining room, we have furniture in our Living Room, it's just not what I want. We turned 1/2 our basement into LOs playroom and the other 1/2 is DHs playroom (aka- media room).

@Honeybee: The only upside I can see to our living room is that it's attached to the dining room (which could get used for big family gatherings). Otherwise there's a sun room adjacent to the family room that I'd have guests in before I would have people in that dark depressing living room!

It's set up like a sitting area. We don't really "use" it persay....

@blackbird: Same. I think our dog gets more use out of the one chair than anyone else in the house does!

My house has this and it's such a waste. We actually made the formal room the family room and what was the family room, I want to make into a playroom.

Eventually, I would like to move the dining room into the living room. Sell the living room furniture and make the old dining room a (small) play area.
Currently it's used for storage. The mail is on the sofa table and DH's motorcycle helmet and gloves are on the couch. We will clear the cutter when we have visitors.

We live in a split level house, so we have an upstairs living room (open to the dining room and kitchen) and a downstairs family room. We use the living room to watch tv and hang out when we're cooking, and I use it in the morning while I'm getting ready. When we're just watching tv though we go downstairs. Mostly the dog hangs out in the living room all day, sleeping on the couch and looking out the big picture window.

We don't have a separate dining room. Our kitchen table is the only place to dine in our house, and I like it that way. The living room is the first room you come into when you enter the house. So it feels like a transition room, yet, it's also a room that is nice to spend time in when you don't want the distraction of the TV. So I consider it a room that's nice to use when people just want to talk, or when I flip through magazines or read.

We only have one, its a "living/dining" but we have a TV area at one end and then a couple comfy chairs at the other end.

Growing up we had a "family room" and a "sitting room". The sitting room wasn't really formal, but it was for quiet activities like reading, while the family room is where we had our TV, video games, toys, ectect.

Our living room is on the main floor and family room is in our basement...both have tvs and sitting areas.
