did you move in as is or did you renovate?
And if you renovated, how did it go with having a LO?

We closed in February, when I was 35 weeks pregnant. So far we haven't done much. We did get the ceiling repaired so when she was a week old we pretty much were stuck in our bedroom for a couple days cause nothing was in the living room due to dust. In the next couple years we need to finish our basement.

DH bought our home when he was 19 before we were even together. He completely renovated it. It was in bad shape. The living room and hallway were pepto bismol pink!! Obviously there were no LOs then. But we still live here and own this house!

I bought a brand new house, so no renovations. We did do some improvements though, we added a backsplash and picture frame molding to the kitchen.

We bought it before having LO.
We had moved in and then did the new hardwood floors. We were fine living in a mess for a while. I don't think I could have done it with a LO though.

We bought our house in 2009. It was considered move-in ready, though it didn't come with appliances so we had to buy those. We have done a lot of renovations, though, and most of them were done before C was born in 2011.
We ripped out the carpet and installed laminate flooring in April 2013. C and I slept at my parents house for the weekend. My husband and dad put in the flooring in the dining room and living room before C and I came home. They finished the hallway that same week.
We painted our kitchen cabinets over the course of two days in August 2013. We did it while she was napping and after she went to bed. We let everything dry outside! Super easy.
@Danizaur: Was your house built in the 80s? We had peach walls with orange shag carpet in one bedroom. The previous owners re-carpeted the house with white carpet except for one bedroom! We replaced it, though.

We didn't renovate in the sense that we ripped anything out...other than carpet. Our son was 2.5 years old and we didn't move in until it was all done. We were staying in a small apartment and we just continued there.
We painted every single wall, ceiling and trim, refinished the hardwoods, built a wall in place of some railing, installed ceiling lights in all of the bedrooms.

We are moving this weekend! The house we are moving to is move in ready, but we need to remove wallpaper in 3 bathrooms and paint the kitchen cabinets. Planning on doing the majority of the work while LO is sleeping, or having family come over and help watch him while we work.

We found a house we could move in as-is because we knew we would be overwhelmed trying to renovate while pregnant or with an LO.

We replaced windows, had the popcorn ceiling scraped, walls painted and changed the carpet before we moved in. We want to do major kitchen and bathroom remodels soon and I'm not how that will work with two young LOs.

We moved in as-is in 2012. We painted the majority of the rooms and replaced appliances in '12, but things came to a halt when I got pregnant. We did have the roof done this past August, and still need to renovate both bathrooms.

We own a 2 story condo unit, we occupy the 2nd & 3rd floor. We renovated during the first year of marriage and while I was pregnant, we hired contractors to completely renovated both bathrooms. HGTV makes everything look so easy and effortless but it's a lot of hard work. I am so over renovating. Our next purchase will be a house in suburbia and as move-in-ready as possible.

We bought our house in January 2012, and have not done any renovating, only some small cosmetic changes. We've painted quite a bit, replaced a couple of light fixtures and some cabinet knobs, and cleaned up the yard, but that's really it. Our house was great as-is and although we are planning on remodeling the master bathroom and kitchen, they were functional and not too ugly, so we are waiting until the $$ is there.

Renovating right now and it is no fun. Naps and bedtime are busy and I wish we could just relax!
pomegranate / 3895 posts
We custom built. But now we're planning to finish the basement, so a bit of a reno,, but at least it will be out of the way.
Our next house will likely be a big reno, as the neighbourhood we want to move to is all older homes.

Both houses we moved in as is. The old house was flipped (just a disaster covered in pretty finishes). Our new house is a new construction so it was move in ready.

We moved in as is when I was 27 weeks pregnant. We painted the kitchen and decorated the baby's room before he was born. We've done a lot more to the house but most of it has taken place when he was between 8 and 12 months old. Now that baby #2 is due next month I don't see anymore happening around here until next year.

We bought our first home in June of this year. Before moving in (in one month's time) we repainted every interior wall and updated the kitchen. We had a contractor friend come up with DH's parents and everyone worked their butts off for a long weekend of painting cabinets, removing and reinstalling new flooring, new countertops, building a wall of cabinetry, and small tasks like the windowsill, new light fixture, and new dishwasher install.
We have been doing something almost contstantly since moving in, and are SO CLOSE to finishing the kitchen for good this coming weekend. We have been tiling a backsplash ourselves with a complicated pattern (herringbone) after bed for a few weekends now. All we have left is grout, sealing, and caulking. Really ready to be done with that. After working all day, tiling is the last thing we want to do once she's in bed on a weeknight. I figured we would be done within a week or two - it's been a month now
We've also just been moving in slowly. It's hard to really unpack and decorate in general when she is awake, so we're taking it slow.

Ours was move in ready, this was important to us as we ae not "fix it/DYI" kinds of people! Painting is the most we can handle...and actually our mom's did it because we both suck at that too! haha

We're basically moving in as-is -- next week!!! We have owned the house for a few weeks already, and the only thing we've done so far is to get the upstairs carpet ripped out, upstairs hardwood floors refinished, and we're painting DD's room right now. We thought we'd do some more work before moving in, but we haven't had time to hire the contractors that we need, so we'll do more as we have time. We're thinking that next summer we will re-do both of our hideous 1950's upstairs bathrooms. We can do one at a time, so that we don't lose access to a shower/tub at any point in time.

Bought it about 1 1/2 years before having LO-- we bought it from the original owners (house was built in 1954!) and we haven't done much yet-- just painting, replacing some old/broken appliances, but nothing that's required knocking down walls.
When we do, it's going to be a cluster/HUGE project, so I want to wait until 1) we have more money saved up and 2) the kids are a little older.
pomegranate / 3113 posts
We removed the horrible, horrible wallpaper that covered every surface of the kitchen (walls...ceiling...doors...) and painted the kitchen and our bedroom before we moved in. All the other projects are slowly being chipped away at. We wanted to spread the costs out, and none of it is stuff that HAS to be done for the house to be liveable, so doing things this way works for us.
Oh, I should add that the previous owner (well, her son as it was an estate sale) had redone the plumbing, refinished the hardwood floors, and painted the non-wallpapered rooms off-white before putting it on the market, so for the most part it looked pretty good. If the walls had still been mauve, we probably would have done more painting at the outset

We moved in as is 4 years ago, and it's always a work in progress. We didn't have the money at the time for renovations and planned to slowly fix the house up as needed. The first big project was to replace the roof less than a year later. Since then we've started a family, and home upgrades usually get pushed down the priority list.
persimmon / 1223 posts
We bought our house before LO and it was new construction so as-is with minimal upgrades. Looking back I really wish we would have upgraded more since the thought of doing a lot of renovations with a baby seems rather daunting. We did install laminate flooring throughout our downstairs while I was pregnant which was nuts...
honeydew / 7444 posts
We bought it before LO and moved in as is. We renovated the basement a few months later. After LO, we also got new hardwood floors and refinished the stairs but was out of town for 3 weeks. We decided to time it that way so LO didn't have to deal with the dust.

We bought ours before we had LO and moved right in. We did a bit of work to it after we moved in. DH gutted our half bath and totally redid it himself. It took him a good amount of time and I'm not sure how we would have done it with LO here. Painting and removal of wallpaper also would have been a little bit of a problem, though we could have done it.
We're thinking about moving LO to our front bedroom now and that's still wallpapered. DH said that he would essentially just ask one of our brothers to help and try to bang out the wallpaper removal in a day while I took LO out for the day.

Our house was semi custom, but because we bought a lot that someone backed out of, some of the finishes were already in the house. We wanted to get a lot of work done prior to moving, but with the lease of our townhouse ending, we had no choice. Within a day of moving in, we didn't have access to our first floor (lasted about a week) because we were installing new hardwood. It wasn't easy with LO, but we ate out and got a lot of take out. We're lucky that our house is big enough upstairs where he could still have a playarea. We still need to paint the whole house, work on a built in in the media niche, and redo the flooring in all the bathrooms. We are doing it slowly since we're doing it on our own.

We purcahsed our home, but continued to live in an apartment during the renovations. We still had a couple of months to go on our lease so we had to continue to pay it and figured we might as well stay put and not deal with the contractors, etc. It was ideal since we were able to live without the dust and traffic, and also gradually move items in.
coconut / 8430 posts
We scraped the popcorn ceiling before we moved in. I honestly don't know how anyone can live in a house where that is being done! It looked like the set of Dexter with all the plastic hanging everywhere! Plus when they were done it was really dusty for days.
We bought before we had our LO. Not sure how we are going to handle it when we want to redo our bathrooms!
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
We did a full reno, top to bottom. It took ~2 weeks and we hadn't moved in yet, we didn't have a LO either but seeing as how we moved in once it was complete it wouldn't have mattered.
pomegranate / 3759 posts
We moved into an old farm house that didn't even have proper heat. We moved in right away and have been renovating since the day we moved in. We are just finishing up the reno's so we haven't had LO for very long for the process. She does pretty good though.

@Pepper: Congrats, that is so exciting!
We're starting to look at places to buy but the prospect of renovating scares me because of the logistics and because I'm not that creative! I'm not very good at imagining what a place COULD look like with a few changes. Sounds like staying in a different place while renovating is the way to go...

I bought it move in ready. I haven't done any renovating although I am still trying to paint the cabinets.LOL

When I bought my condo, I replaced the carpet, painted the walls, purchased new toilets, washing maching and dryer, dishwasher, garbage disposal and fridge. I also had the house professionally cleaned (and then cleaned it again myself). I am a bit of a germ phob when it comes to using anything that other people used. I wish I would have re-done the showers and tubs. If I had more money, I would do more. I installed ceiling fans and then was completely - and remain completely - tapped out. I didn't have a LO and I was still living at my mom's house so there were no issues.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Nope it was built in 2001. Had some wacko owners before it got repossessed.
clementine / 901 posts
It was move-in ready because we built it. It was all builder basics tho, so we've done some work on it, painting, backsplash, bamboo floors.

Our townhouse was built in the 80's so it needs some updates but was pretty much move-in ready. We had our kitchen cabinets re-faced and countertops re-done when LO was about 10 months old and it was a tough 3 days. Our kitchen water was shut off and everything in our kitchen was moved into our dining room and basement so stuff was everywhere and disorganized. Luckily LO was eating mostly jar purees at that point but it was a pain making bottles. Also very lucky he's a deep sleeper - I think only one of his naps was disrupted, but at some points the construction noise was super loud.

We didn't renovate, as in knock down walls, but we did do some updating. We painted the entire house, got new carpet, etc. We closed the first week of September, and I'm still not done unpacking and decorating. It's tough with a 7-month-old! I'm just trying to prioritize and not freak out that it's not exactly how I want it right away.

We purchased a brand new house. So, no renovations necessary. We did add on a deck and bought equipment for the media room.
